I've driven from Genoa to Monaco. No problem. You do need to slow down on those blind curves on the cliffs.

I don't know about you Flanner but I don't think driving at 160km is dawdling and I stay in the slow lane at all times. I have also driven from Tuscany to the Savoy region with no problems it was just those two experiences that were so horrible.

All we are saying is have your wits about you, it is not a cruisy Sunday afternoon drive. Maybe the drivers are just extra mean on the route from Milan to Rome, actually I think the scariest part was from Stressa, I think a lot of those trucks were heading for Milan, they were certainly on some mission or the other!!!

I am somewhat perplexed as to what the fuss is all about regarding this route. I've driven back and forth on the coast route from Avignon to Savona, then inland toward Alessandria. Yes, there are tunnels and curves, but we didn't find this route to be particularly harrowing, no more so than the A1 or other Autostrada.

Good, good this is very good. A few of you are completely confused as to what the fuss is about. I will tell you all how it goes. If you see me, wave. I will be the woman straight-arming it to Italy.

Geez, Take a chance... You only live once. Have driven all through Europe, France, Italy, Croatia, Germany, Slovenia, it is the only way to see a country. Drove from Paris to Rome, the best trip of my life. Driving in Rome or Florence is pretty tough, park it and walk. What else are you going to do, fly over everything, look out a window and ride past all of the places you would like to stop and look at. Get a car....

The only thing I didn't like about the tunnels was the radio station kept going in and out and they were playing some great Euro-techno-music that day. I guess after commuting in Los Angeles all my life and dodging gunfire and drunk drivers on the way to work, nothing really frightens me any more when it comes to driving.

Listen I'm not one to merge into traffic at 40km/hr then hug the right lane at 80. I just don't want some crazy person honking their horn yelling at me in Italian while I try to find my translation book. (I'm up to knowing about 3 words at present)Sounds like the beach road would be pleasant but I don't want to get there at midnight. We are meeting people and I want to be sipping chianti in the vineyard by 7!

BarbSG...to learn some possible Italian responses, watch some reruns of the Sopranos. Some universal hand gestures work as well.

I did Nice/Sanremo and back. If you don't like highways, there are always secondary roads, with much less stress and better views

While Italian drivers drive fast, I've found them to be quite polite. They will come up behind u if u are in the left lane and blink their lights 4 u to move over to the right, so they can pass. But I have never been honked at or yelled at. maybe I've been lucky.

TopGear just had a rerun show on last night about doing part of that drive, in the summer. They used a Lambo, a Porsche 911 and an Aston-Martin. They didn't seem to have any problems, other than James May's Aston was a race car, had no AC and windows that didn't open. Last scene I saw he was sitting naked in the car, pouring bottled water on himself to cool down.
