Has anyone recently returned from Croatia?
There hasn't been much activity on the Croatia section of Foder's, and I know several people were planning trips. I would be interested in a trip report or any comments. We are leaving September 28th and returning October 10th.

Grasshopper: We fly into Split, bus to Dubrovnik and fly to Zagreb. We are hoping to take day trips from Dubrovnik to Montenegro, Megjugorie and some of the islands. We would like to take a day trip to Korcula, but so far can't find an excursion on a day that we can do it. This is our first trip to Croatia, and we can't wait. I enjoyed reading your comments earlier threads.

Just came back from Croatia 2 weeks ago,I have spent about 2 weeks.
For daytrip to Montenegro from Dubrovnik:there are companies offering bustours. Kotor, Budva and Sveti Stefan are wroth visiting.
Near Split, don't miss the lovely little island Trogil and the Cathedral in Sibenik.
If possible, try to hike in Plitivica Lakes National Park, very easy walks and most beautiful sceneries.

The Atlas Montenegro trip was fantastic. Don't miss it. It's a long day but incredibly interesting and the scenery is unbelievable. I also took the Pelejsec Peninsula and wine tasting excursion. Very interesting.
I wish I had gone to Split. Just not enough time. Have a GREAT time!

I just returned from Europe last night. You will love Croatia. As Grasshopper said, take the trip to Montenegro. It's a wonderful day trip. Atlas really does a good job with excursions. Diocletian's Palace in Split is amazing and if you are in Split on a Sunday, go to Bacvice Beach where the locals hang out. Take your suit and go people watching. Trogir is an easy bus trip from there and a lovely little town. Cavtat is easily reachable from Dubrovnik and is also a lovely town. Walk the city walls in the town. It's beautiful up there. You will absolutely have a fantastic time. Any questions, just ask.

Deborah, glad to hear you had a good trip. We leave on 9/29; can't wait. I do have a question: Did you see the Hotel Park in Split, and if so, any comments? On one of your earlier posts I responded that we were orginally booked at the Hotel Marjan and changed to the President. However, I was mistaken, we changed to Hotel Park. Also, we have been watching the five day forecasts and so far it looks warm. (70F - 60F) How was the weather while you were there?

I just got back from Hvar this past Sunday - I'm starting to pull together my notes.
Carroll - Are you staying in Split for a few days or just passing through onto other environs? Split is a major transport hub - large apartments buildings north of the city, a fair amount of graffiti and lots of tourist shops. The walk in front of Diocletian's (sp?) Palace is pleasent but not extordinary. I hope I'm not throwing a wrench in your plans but I would only spend a few hours in Split then move on.

Thrilled to find this thread! i'm heading to eastern europe on Monday and will be in Croatia in mid-October. Will concentrate on Dubrovnik and southern coast. Am very interested in: hotel recommendations in dubrovnik; good guidebook(s)(haven't really found a good one, thus the puzzle of hotels); travelling from dubrovnik to venice. hard to find ferry schedules for post-Sept. 13. And will I be OK waiting until i'm in dubrovnik to make my transport plans/reservations to venice? (I'll be in Dubrovnik at least a week ahead of travel to venice.) sorry to pack so many questions into one email!

Must agree too - perfect timing of this thread. I'm planning a Spring (May 2004) visit to Croatia and the previous threads have been very useful for ideas. It's still early days, but I was thinking of combining this trip with a few days in either Budapest or Prague (I'm aware of the distances between both of them to Croatia). Has anyone done this and is there anything that you would or wouldn't recommend about this destination combo? Gateway flights would be from London or Munich. Any info much appreciated. Ta.

I was over by the Hotel Park, but was not inside the hotel. I believe it's over by Bacvice Beach where I spent a couple of hours on a Sunday afternoon. Nice area and the walk to town is about 10-15 minutes, not far. The Hotel Park was sold out when I went. The weather was great for the first 5 days and then we got some rain. It was the first rain they had in 6 months. It was stopping when I left last Thursday.

Marktynernyc: We will be in Split for two nights. We arrive in the afternoon, spend the night one day and then leave via bus for Dubrovnik. I think the time in Split will be OK for us because I would like to take an excursion from there to Trogir also. We will be in Dubrovnik for six night. We hope to take several day trips from Dubrovnik (Montenegro, Megjugorie and some of the islands). We then fly to Zagreb for two nights and then home. I am looking forward to your trip report and read with much interest the messages you posted while you were in Hvar.
Happy 4: I am using DK Eyewitness, this web site and a few others.
Mathieu: Although I don't have personal experience with the combination you are suggesting, I think Prauge would be a good fit, and they do have easy flihts from Prague to Split and Zagreb. We went to Prague last year and loved it. For this trip we change planes in Prague to get to Split and considered spending a couple of days there before going on to Split but decided otherwise due to time constraints. However, if you have never been to Prague, you might consider flying into Prague, spend a few days and then fly into Zagreb or Split.
Deborah: Thanks for the info on Hotel Park. I'm looking forward to a report from you!
Has anyone gone to Mostar? We were considering it as an excursion from Dubrovnik, but were told that it wasn't worth it. Any other comments? Thanks.

Hi Carroll:
I think you will be fine at the Hotel Park. I think it's one of the nicest hotels in the city. The Hotel President was also very nice. You can take the bus to Trogir from the bus station which is an easy walk from the Hotel Park. I believe it's 14 Kuna one way. It will take you 1/2 hour and it's a lovely town.

Thanks very much Carroll. I was leaning towards Prague (Budapest will be saved for another trip) and probably will fly as you suggest. Right now it's looking like 3 or 4 days in Prague and 5 in Croatia with a week in London at the end.
