I have stayed in Lido once, and I cannot recommend it to most first-time visitors to Venice without a specific reason. One such reason might be if you can not afford two nights (as opposed to ne night) any other way.

Best wishes,

Rex
Had to stay there once, it wasn't too bad. Very quiet. It's only about 15 minutes by boat to the main land. I wouldn't stay there unless I had no choice on the mainland.

I visited Lido once, pretty much by accident, but we ended up exploring the island anyway. The book "Death In Venice" takes place on Lido, I'm pretty sure.

It's got a nice little shell beach that's kind of a neat place to check out, and there are some nice shops, but I don't think I'd necessarily go out of my way to visit Lido if you only have a little time in Venice.

We stayed there because we had a rental car which obviously couldn't be driven into Venice. Lido is very convenient to Venice. Has a casino, and a nice golf course.

"A Death in Venice" was filmed at the Hotel des Bains on the Lido. I stayed at the Hungaria Palace many years ago and was surprised to see it still standing in 1996, sloaping floors, tiled front and all. My husband couldn't believe how different the atmosphere was on the Lido-lots of trees and rather quiet and uncrowded.
