Has anyone ever stayed at Owlpen Manor??

... in the Cotswolds?? I just learned about it. It looks magnificent. We are looking into staying there during our travels in March. We're especially interested in the Court House or Summerfield Cottage. (This will be our honeymoon). We will only have 2 nights to stay here however. Any comments appreciated!
Pilar

I have never stayed there but on a trip in Sept. 98 that was one of the places on my list to visit. I had read about it and heard it was Englands version of "Brigadoon"(SP?). We were staying in the Cotswolds at a cottage in Stanton and took a day to visit Owlpen. It is "off the beaten path" and the some of the cottages are on the road leading down to the main area where the Manor House is. We were very impressed and it was exactly as I pictured it to be. We were not able to go into any of the cottages as they were occupied at the time but we stayed and had tea at the Cyder House Restaurant and picked up some info on Owlpen. I have been doing self-catering the last few years in the UK and even though Owlpens prices are a bit high I would stay there on a future trip for sure. If you do decide to stay there, please post a reply when you get back.

Hi Ginny, if we do end up staying there I will post about it when we return. I just don't know if it's worth staying there for one or two nights -- or if it's better to plan to go sometime when we can stay put right there for a week or so... If anyone has stayed there, I'm really interested in hearing about it.
Pilar

We didn't stay, but visited, last year and that was enough. I wondered what the Fodor writer was on when he wrote all that ooo-ahhh crap. Everyone in our party from 22 to 85 thought it was VERY overrated and not really comparable to a lot of other villages in the Cotswolds we have seen over many trips. Staff was not particularly friendly and stood around as if they were afraid you were going to steal the crown jewels. Way out of the way SW of Gloucester. Time can be much better spent in other areas. We will definitely put Owlpens in the "been there, done that" category for future trips, and a reminder not to rely too much on guidebooks, even Fodors which is better than average. Granted, some of the most beautiful villages like Bibury, Bourton-on-the-Water and Chipping Campden are over-touristy but if you catch them at the right time, they're magnificent.
