I had a history professor in college who looked JUST like one of those troll dolls that were popular at the time. Some friends of mine talked me into drawing a slightly caricaturized sketch of him. (I used to draw all the time.) Then various people wanted photocopies of it, because they liked him, and the drawing was comical, but really did look like him. Unfortunately he eventually saw it and was less than pleased.

Wait a darn minute now. Icethecat just admitted that a successful troll requires a box of chocolates (Trollines, in fact, very wittily). And didn't I just read Faith (of the eccentric water-fearing-cousin Bambi fame) say she needed another chocolate before continuing her message. H-m-m...trolled again!

No LJ, I am not Faith. I could never make my mind think that naively.

Changed my mind. It's genuine. The initial post didn't seem to be.

I'll admit to NOT being a troll.

It's tough enough trying to ask straight questions and give straight answers without trying to be clever and invent subjects and answers!

Since Lord of the Rings was mentioned above, can I ask the American posters a question? While "trolling" through the tv channels this morning, we hit on a Dutch teleshopping channel selling official Lord of the Rings jewelry. About as cheesy at you'd expect. But what cracked us up was the "testimonial" from one of the experts, who said with a completely straight face:
"I've been studying the Elfan language for several years now and the engraving on the ring is quite accurate."
Is this showing on U.S. home shopping networks? We bet the Elf language expert speaks Klingon, too. Who knows, there's probably an EU translating job for him somewhere.

P.S. The cattle slaughter vacation thread was a rip. Great stuff. Sad part though is that level of debate takes place for REAL every day on some Yahoo groups...check out the Anti-PETA group or the Animal Rights Debate group.

BTilke, since's it's not clear from your post, do you know that Tolkien actually invented a complete language for the elves as part of the LOTR? So the person on tv probably HAD been studying it for several years. Talk about a "dead" language -- this one was never alive!

Tolkien invented and constructed not only one language, but several.

Some websites of interest....

Elvish Linguistic Fellowship:
http://www.elvish.org/

A pretty detailed website that outlines many, perhaps even all, of the languages that Tolkien developed:
http://www.uib.no/People/hnohf/

Klingon, by the way, is recognized as a real language to the extent that there was a recent job opening at a psychiatric hospital for someone who was fluent in Klingon. Apparently some of the patients refused to speak English and restricted themselves to speaking Klingon, exclusively. An interpreter was necessary.

Klingon Language Institute:

Sorry, need to correct myself:

Not a psychiatric hospital, but a program that treats mental health patients through the Dept of Human Services in Portland, Oregon.

Marilyn & BR: thanks so much for your invaluable information on otherworldly languages!

In anticipation of the coming Klingon invasion, here are some useful phrases:

Yes HIja'

Hello nuqneH

What's happening? qaStaH nuq?

Where is the bathroom? nuqDaq 'oH puchpa''e

Your mother has a smooth forehead!

Hab SoSlI' Quch! [To be said with the most insulting tone you have!]

JRR Tolkein wrote in the 60s in England. At that time LSD was still being given as a prescription for a painkiller.

He 'travelled' to many lands for years and wrote many languages.

I had a school friend who was born 'cold turkey' from a mom who was on heroin. She was 'weaned' using heroin.

She had many first hand tales to tell. We all had to determine for ourselves which were real and which were not.

Smart as a tack she was. She beat me in marks on every course except income tax and statistics. (How to).

There was a poster a few months ago who posted about the advisability of taking his fiancee on an Antarctic cruise honeymoon. He confessed shortly, though.

I was warned long before posting here that forums and chat rooms were a favorite hangout for dysfunctional people, which is one reason why many veteran travelers refuse to register and/or contribute. (We experience enough dysfunction on the road in the real world.) For many years I simply read and took notes but spent way too much time sifting through the garbage. No wonder so many people ask the same questions over and over. At least, I have tons of patience. Many don't.

Fodors is my first acquaintance with the term "troll" on the internet. My gay male friends use the term to describe overweight, unnattractive older men who lust after younger, gorgeous nubians.

I adore creativity in all forms and I agree some troll posts might actually be smart, clever, and very entertaining. After all, it's just an exercise in writing and, at least here, you stand a chance of someone responding. I don't see much harm.

I "outed" Degas and dumas1870 but that thread is long gone. They may not have been trolls but they were certainly double posters playing a game. Degas ranted at me in one reply and, after I ranted back, dumas responded to the rant but continued in the voice of Degas. Several regulars played witness to these shenanigans before the thread got pulled. I'm sure Degas/dumas was ticked. I expect the game will continue but with different names. Faith, maybe?

I could see why some enjoyed Degas/dumas. I did not. Personal attacks with foul language are unacceptable here and everywhere. They should never be tolerated. Once someone performs in such a way, I'm turned off forever. Degas/dumas also thrived on political discourse and negative stereotypes. Frankly, it was all a display of bad manners and belonged somewhere else.

For what it's worth, I, too, had a troll doll collection.

An illuminated sign seen here, near home the other day, that you all reminded me of.

ELF STORAGE (burned out letter in front). Just in case any elvish speakers needed a place to stay.
