Guides in Spain
When visiting the sites such as Sagrada Familia, Mezquita, Alcazar and Alhambra I understand it is preferred to secure tickets in advance, correct? How about guides? Or do you rely on those near the site to hire or join?

Welcome, PBrady. In general, go online to see about advance entries. I'd say same with guides. Others can say about the guides who volunteer on site but I'd be wary...especially if they want a lot of money! Larger cities have volunteer guides...can someone provide info???

PBrady,
Yes, one must secure tickets in advance online for Barcelona's Sagrada Familia, for Granada's Alhambra, with timed entrance for the Nasrid Palace section, and Sevilla's Alcázar, to avoid the often long lines now that one will encounter mid-morning, especially if one wants to visit the Cuarto Real, the Royal Apartments, for which tickets often sell out 2 weeks in advance, but not usually in January or February.
If you want to see only the Alcázar and gardens, without the timed, 30-minute guided visit to the Royal Apartments, tickets can be secured online just a day or two in advance, if you want to play this by ear. Or... be at the entrance just before opening at 9:30 if you find the day before when passing by, that the line at 9:30 is relatively short.

From March to September the Alcázar is now offering an evening visit. I haven't experience it yet.

On my last visit to Córdoba, there wasn't a long line to secure tickets to the Cathedral-Mosque, Mezquita, so you don't necessarily need to purchase these online in advance.

If you also want to take in the light and sound night visit, The Soul of Córdoba, the tickets for this visit do sell out, as the visits are capacity controlled (80 participants per visit) and don't take place every night. Tickets are available online for this usually just a month in advance. There are two evening shows, the times varying, depending on the date.

For the Cathedral-Mosque, there is free entrance Monday to Saturday from 8:30 to 9:30 am only, before Eucharist at 9:30. No groups are allowed during this time and no audio guide.
