I found a great series called In Detail for Florence and Rome that gives very detailed waling tours. Each tour includes a map and a list of shops, bars and places to eat in each area.
I bought the Florence version for our upcoming trip so I have yet to test the usefulness of the book. It looks great, though.

The HP/Compaq iPAQ is a computer the size of an iPod. You can get the older models for around $100.
Google for ebook travel and you will see hundreds of selections.

Thank you all for your responses. Personally, I love books. However, my husband will have all the computer gadgets along with him. We're really looking forward to our trip. My husband has flown into Rome three times in the last year, but has never really had an opportunity to tour the city. He gets picked up at the airport and whisked away to his business destination. He says the countryside is beautiful and loves the people and food. The company he visits is north and east of Rome. The people there take him to such wonderful restaurants for 3-hour lunches and late dinners; places only locals seem to know about.
Thanks again for your input!
