I want to thank everyone for the thoughtful responses. It's good to know that others are wrestling with the same problem.
I really do not want to take more medication (the patch; Bonine) because of the side effects that others have experienced. Jet-lag is enough of a problem without exaserbating it with drugs. I also agree that it is just not "sporting" to sign up for an extended tour and then demand a specific seat. So, unless someone can name a specific tour where a permanent seat might work, it looks like a tour will not be possible.

This has been my problem since I was a kid in the back seat of a car. Dramamine was a wonderful discovery for me. I've noticed as I get older, I still have a problem but get by with as little as half a pill every few hours. Not that any of this helps you, but I understand that there's now Dramamine that's supposed to be a non-drousy formula. I haven't tried it and I can't say how I'd be on a tour bus with anything. Maybe that's one reason I've avoided tours.

Riding for a long time on a bus worrying that you might feel sick is no fun. I've had the best luck with the accupressure bands, but even they sometimes fail me at the wrong moment. Riding through lovely scenery that you can't enjoy really negates the experience of travel. So my recommendation would be to stay away from buses entirely and try to travel by car or train. About the train--I learned the hard way not to try to read on the TGV in France.

On the train, I don't really care for seats that face 'backwards' either, and it's really kind of the same issue - movement off sides rather than looking straight ahead. But it's definitely easier to maybe get up and walk around a little..
