Greek Islands Questions
Hello, we are planning a honeymoon in late august this year to the greek islands. Does anyone have any suggestions of good islands or good hotels to see? we've heard that mykonos ans santerini are very touristy. We'd like a place with nightlife as well as great beaches/scenery.
any help is appreciated!

You're right, Mykonos and Santorini are very touristy. For me the most romantic place in the Cyclades is Folegandros, a tiny island not far from Sanotrini with a delightful hotel called the Anemomilos run by an English speaking couple called Lia and Dimitris. It is perched on cliffs overlooking the sea, on the edge of the main (only) village on the island.
Downsides are: it is very quiet (nightlife would be restricted to three tavernas and one bar) but you could combine it with a night or two on Santorini which is always humming.
Also you would have to go to the beach by moped or boat - but they are idyllic little coves and worth the effort, compared to the supercrowded strips of dark sand on Santorini etc.
For more info you can see the review I wrote on

http://www.i-escape.com/anemomilosapartments.php

Have fun!

The islands will be very hot in late August. Therefore, you need an air-conditioned hotel. I suggest Vedema in a little town on Santorini. There you can avoid the crowds at Fira, but still enjoy the nightlife. If you go to Mykonos, I recommend the Santa Marina at Ornos Bay, again not in the main town. These islands will be filled with tourists but they are beautiful.

For a good mix of activities and sandy nooks for private snogging try Paros!

Share our Piece of Paradise: www.iol.ie/~balydhob

My husband and I honeymooned in Greece several years ago and absolutely LOVED Santorini!!! It might be touristy, but that is because it is absolutely beautiful. We were told by many friends how nice it was and were afraid that our expectations were going to be too high - but it was even better than everyone had said. The black sand beach was incredible (bring beach sandals b/c as you might imagine the sand gets HOT), and we also found a red and black beach which was much less crowded. There was a lot to do - we took an excursion where we hiked up the volcano, swam in the hot springs, and visited a fishing village where we rode donkeys up the mountain (a lot scarier than I thought it would be!). There was a lot of shopping, restaurants, and nightlife (we are not big club-goers, but there seemed to be lots of them around). We still consider Santorini to be our favorite place in the world. It was an absolutely wonderful honeymoon and I can't recommend it highly enough!

We also went to Crete which was really nice as well. We stayed at a very nice and very out of the way resort, and we only left once for an excursion to the marina which was really great. No matter where you go I'm sure you will love it. If you haven't been to Athens, you should really try to spend a day or two there. Everyone told us to see the acropolis and then leave for the islands, but we really enjoyed the city and wished we spent another night there.

Have a wonderful time and many congratulations!!!!
