Greek Islands in January?

Hi Fodorites,
We're planning to visit Athens and Nafplion end of Dec beginning of January. Would you suggest a visit to one of the islands around that time of the year?
If so, which one?
Thanks, -- finemouche

You're daft. It will be too cold. People will be wearing coats in Athens in January.

How about Athens the first week of February? I don't think I'd go to an island, but maybe Athens would be nice?

Athens is an all-year city. Also till March the Acropolis and other archeological sites are free of charge each Sunday. If you 'must' go to an island prefer Crete or Rhodes, because all the other smaller islands are a bit desserted during winter.

Athens is always nice. Very delicious greek food, many archeological sites, vivid night life, big shopping centers, many entertainment areas, nice coffee places under Acropolis, Plaka and in Pireus (Castella, Pasalimani) and much more. How many days do you have? Nafplio is very nice, also you can visit, Delphi archeological site, Nafpactos, Galaxidi and Mesologi (all of them a bit north-west close one to other in the same coast line. Only Delpfi up in the mountain). If you intend to go to Peloponissus (Nafplio), have you thought to go also to the other side (western), to ancient Olympia? Maybe too many placies ehh...?

Finemouche, a day trip to one of the Saronic Gulf islands, e.g. Aegina, may be interesting. Apart from that, suggest you stay on the mainland.

Hello!
Don't go to an island that time of year, unless as Heimdall suggested it's somewhere close to Athens as Aegina or Hydra.
Hydra is much much more scenic and i've been there once in January. Almost all shops were closed but still.. the harbour is lovely every time of year!
