Greek Islands for sale?
It seems the Greek government is to sell off or lease some of it's islands to raise much needed cash if the Guardian is to be believed.

It was suggested when the EU bailed the Greeks out that maybe every EU country should get an island as a guarantee we'd get our money back. We haven't go the islands, but no doubt the Russians and Chinese will be queueing up for them. Hopefully they will respect them and not ruin them. Fat chance.

Well Hetismij my 'Greek Island Hopping' guide tells me there are some 1,425 islands of which 166 are inhabited. That leaves 1,259 which could be sold off.
Buying an island is all very well but unless a lot of money is poured on top of the purchase price for access by plane or sea, theres not much point. There probaly is no water on these islands either.
I wonder just how many will get sold?

If you read the article they are talking of selling off great chunks of Mykonos and Rhodos plus some of the smaller inhabited islands, not just little islands that are unfit for habitation.
You can't really see Abramovich buying some chunk of dry rock can you?

What are you talking about people!
These are obviously just HEADLINES to boost newspaper sales!
WE WON'T SELL OFF OUR ISLANDS!
For God's sake! Stop this discussion!
We fought for thousands of years to free the islands from Venetian, French, English, Italian, Turkish and who else's occupation and sacrifised hundreds of thousands of lives! READ OUR HISTORY! Do you seriously think we'll start selling them off now? What if I was to "ask" the UK to sell some of its islands in the Atlantic or the Pacific? Or maybe "ask" the US to sell Hawaii?
Even if we go for broke and starve to death as a nation, selling off the land our ancestors stuggled to free IS NOT AN OPTION!

Never believe anything you read in The Guardian!
Since most land on the islands is privately owned already (much of it by foreigners), I can't see how selling off a few more hectares will make much difference. ;-)
