Greek ferries

can someone let me the reliability of Greek ferries? Do they usually arrive on time? I am catching a flight early evening and I am wondering if I should risk taking a high speed boat from Mykonos the same morning back to Athens. K

You have not written your travel dates. In July-August'ferries do get cancelled due to Meltemy winds.
I was in Greece in late April-early May.I travelled thrice by ferry.Report:
1.Pireus-Heraklio(Crete)-Started 3 hours late aperantly due to bad weather.
2.Crete-Santorini-No ferry for 3 days.20.00 to 24.00 --30 min.late
3.Santorini-Pireus--All ferries cancelled due to strike.Ferry next day mornning 8.00-17.00hrs--2hrs30 Min.Late.
This was an off season.
Lesson I learnt from Forum:
When in Greece,be flexible.Do not plan very tight schedule.Don't get upset for delays.Relax & enjoy.
I hope I have answered your question.
All the best. You are visiting the most exotic place on planet Earth.

Parag said it all ... flexibility is the key!

I've been taught to plan a trip to Greece in the summer (more specially so in August) leaving Athens to the end to accomodate for winds/strikes/whatever. If you can't afford being flexible, your odds should improve substantially by booking an early flght out from Mykonos.

Paulo

I wouldn't take the chance of a ferry the same day. Go the day before to Athens and feel happy you will be able to make the flight the next day.

Good luck.

was on the island two summers in July, arrived on island to beautiful weathr, then the winds came in unexpectedly early and the ferry could not get into the island for 3 hours and then when it did, we were all night getting to Athens arriving about 4oam. No yu cannot plan close connections. --But you'll love Myknos so be sure to go!

Hi Kelley,

the what the peopl above said is correct. In addition to that, I woluld reccomend you a fine book, the best of its kind:

"Independent Traveler's Greek Island Hopping 2001" by Frewin Poffley

Customers in Amazon.com rate it with 5 stars. And is from there that I took the followin comment:

"You don't need it if you're going on a cruise (it's rather snooty about cruises, with that backpacker reverse snobbery)or if you're going to fly to one island and stay there. In fact the details about the boats and timetables may be too much. If you're moving from island to island independently you have to have it. It's the only one that tells you about the boats themselves. Reading this book could even save your life My favorite comment in the 1999 edition was about the boat then called the Golden Vergina. "a large grime bucket-she has inthe past shuddered along, not thanks to an excess of engine vibration but rather with the collective disgust of her passengers. thanks to the conditions on board ... better than no boat all but only just." She was renamed the Express Santina and if you read about the Paros shipwreck you know the rest. 80 were drowned"

I own a past years version of that book and it was just great, it had all info about the inside and outside condition, age, etc. of ALL the greek ferries/ ships! Trust it like it!

For any additional info pls e-mail me at: [email protected]

All the best,

Georgio.

I've had dealings with several Greek fairies and they were always on time( some were a little early,if you know what I mean!) And all of them were perfect gentlemen.

For Charlie,
A himbo is a male version of the Bimbo-hence himbo.
