Greece or Italy
Planning a one week trip to Greece or Italy to celebrate my 40th birthday. Will have a group of 5-7 of my dearest friends. It's our first trip to Europe, so I'm torn. Considering Santorini and/or Amalfi coast-somewhere dreamy and wonderful. Need advice from more experienced travelers. What do you recommend? Tell me about your experiences.

Time frame is April or May, though we are far enough out to have some flexibility. We would like to enjoy great food and wine, the coast & natural scenery, "must-see" historical sights, architecture, art, and culture. Would rather not spend our time getting from one place to another, rather to sit still long enough to soak up at least a bit of the character and ambiance.

Santorini is fantastic, but the weather is unstable and unpredictable before mid-May. Avoid mid-April Greek Easter weekend, April 19. It's the busiest few days of the year for Greeks travelling home for the holiday. Typically, all hotels, domestic flights, ferries and rental cars are booked solid.
If you want hotel recommendations state your room budget per person, facilities and amenities required. Do some research first so you know what's generally offered.

I traveled to Italy last year for my 40th with 6 other dear friends. We started out in Sorrento, staying at the Hotel Minerva (http://www.minervasorrento.com). We hired Monetti Taxi (http://www.monettitaxi17.it/English.htm) to take us on the Amalfi drive. A must is taking the ferry to Capri and going through the Blue Grotto. It is very touristy so you'd want to get there early. We also hired a convertible taxi to take us around the island and give us the history. That was worth every penny! Have a great time.

Santorini is one of the most gorgeous places I've ever been, but for what you are planning, I would recommend the Amalfi Coast.
The AC is a little easier to get to, and if you are planning on spending the entire week in one spot, there are many more sightseeing options on the AC: you can visit Pompeii, Capri, Paestum, etc. Whereas in Santorini, there isn't nearly as much to "do," and it's more about "see and be." People who need a lot of diversions to occupy themselves might get bored.

I think in this case you'd be better off with Italy. I loved Greece and thought Santorini was about the most wonderful place ever, but for that time of year and a stay of a whole week with some activities, Italy would probably be a better choice for you.
