It was so hot in Athens in August that when I put out pair of soaking wet jeans in the sun, after 15 minutes they were bone dry! I still enjoy Santorini and if you can get a private place it would be away from the crowds. Last year the flights to Cyprus were very cheap and but my husband was not crazy about the "wildness" of the tourists.

The Greek Islands are extremely crowded in August, but with a little planning and tolerance you can still enjoy yourselves. It will definitely be very hot, so make sure you get a room with A/C. Confirmed reservations are necessary. Santorini is a fantastic honeymoon island, so romantic and unique; especially the village of Oia. You can fly there from Athens on both Aegean and Olympic Airlines. Book far in advance by internet, get eTickets and save some money.

I honeymooned in Greece, so I am biased. We went in July. Visited Mykonos for 5 days, Santorini for 6 days, and spent 3 days in Athens (2 in the beginning, one on the way home). Loved every second of it-I couldn't imagine a more romantic spot to honeymoon (but like I said, I am biased). If you go to Santorini I also recommend you stay in Oia. In Mykonos I recommend Cavo Tagoo. Congrats on your upcoming wedding!
