Greece - how to get to Syros from UK
Hi
I've been given the opportunity to stay in Syros for a month from the end of September but have no idea what the best way to get there is from the UK.
Should I aim to get a flight direct to athens then another flight there or a ferry from athens to Syros?
I've never been to Greece before so have no idea how the different ferry systems work.
Thanks in advance
Joanna

Sounds like a great opportunity!
There is a daily Blue Star ferry leaving for Syros from Piraeus at 7:35 am, and a daily Olympic Air flight leaving for Syros from Athens Airport at 5:15 pm. For the morning ferry you could catch an overnight flight from Heathrow (leaving around 10 pm and arriving in Athens around 4 am next day) which will give you enough time to catch the bus from the airport to Piraeus. If you want to take the flight to Syros, you need to arrive in Athens by around 3 - 3:30 pm. Check BA, Olympic Air, and Aegean Airlines for flights to Athens.
An alternative would be to fly easyJet to Mykonos and catch the ferry from there to Syros. Be careful with timing, though, unless you want to spend the first night on Mykonos. Some of the afternoon ferries stop running on 27th September, and the easyJet flights arrive early afternoon. Check ferry timetables on www.gtp.gr.

It's not difficult. You can take a ferry from Athens/Piraeus directly to Syros. Go here to see what's available on your travel dates: http://www.gtp.gr
Advance booking for this ferry is not necessary in September. It takes as little as 2.5 hours depending on which ferry you take and an economy ticket will cost between €26-41, again depending on the ferry.
You can also fly there by first changing planes in Athens. Check the website for Olympic Air: http://www.olympicair.com/Home.aspx?a_id=549
