I'm interested in the mainland. I guess depending on when I go, weather will be an important factor.

The one time I went in July, Athens was unbearably hot. The islands less so for some reason.

Yes there's no shortage of scenery so might as well use the best routing.

Because all the Ionian Islands are just off the mainland, there aren’t as many ferries between them as in the Cyclades. Instead, it’s easier to travel between them by car or bus on the mainland, and take a short local ferry ride to the island. That way, for example, you could combine Corfu with another island in the Ionian, eg Lefkada.
You're right about the Ionian islands, such as Kefalonia and Zakynthos. What's striking are the high cliffs. They don't have villages like Oia hanging on those high cliffs but still striking landscapes.

Not too many flight options between say Corfu and Zakynthos, at least nothing that comes up in searches for late May. Maybe there might be more flights loaded later? Otherwise, it seems you'd have to use fly to Athens and then there are a couple of flights departing in the evening and night to Zakynthos.
