McShane, another question. Having trouble finding the right accomodations, quiet but located walking distance to Westport town centre.

What about your townhouse? Can it be rented for just 3 nights or is a longer stay required? Was it quiet at night? (Me, the light sleeper...sigh...) I"ve been working on this all day, want to get it done. I have choices for County Clare and Dublin pretty much decided, but not for Westport.

I have to congratulate you for planning a great trip, now that I see how much work it is! Yes, I've planned trips before of course, but for some reason this one is making me weary just now.

we stayed 3 nights at Hazelbrook House in Deer Park East in Westport. It is a very nice B&B located about a ten minute walk from Matt Malloy's and the Porterhouse. It's an uphill walk, good for you after a few pints. Tele from US: 011- 353 98 26865

there are quite a few other B&B's in Deer Park east if you can't book Hazelbrook House

McShane, I sort of skimmed through some of this so please forgive me if I'm asking a question that you've answered. But I'm very curious as to whether you took your 13 year old son along when you went to the pubs for music. Especially Matt Malloy's.

We're planning to be in Westport in March with our two kids, 20 and 16. Obviously, the 20 year old won't be a problem as the drinking age is 18. But, as I've posted on other threads, we're concerned about having the 16 year old with us for music. He's a big kid, at least 6'1" and 250 lbs.

Anyway, did you take your son? And, if not, what did he do while the rest of you were out?

Thanks. Your descriptions of Westport are making me very anxious to go!

Hi CAPH52,
We did take our son with us once to listen to music. I think we went to the Porterhouse and to another place with a lively rock band, which he thought was fun. There were lots of Irish families there. Really, the place was full - your son wouldn't feel uncomfortable in some of the pubs as there'll be kids.

However, there probably won't be families at Matt Malloy's. Matt Malloy's was quite fun for young adults - a very lively, somewhat inebriated scene. We definitely saw no kids in there.

My husband and I went out together with our daughter to the pubs just once and our son stayed at the townhouse we'd rented and read his book. He was fine, I worried too much so we took turns after that going out in pairs. Probably very silly of me!

Thanks again, McShane! (I just finished thanking you on the other thread!) You've been very helpful. It's very good to hear that there are family friendly places where we'll all be able to catch some music.

I have to admit I'm still wondering about Matt Molloy's though. As I mentioned, our son is 16. And he looks older. Both times we've dropped our daughter at college there have been people who thought he was the one staying! He's very into music so I think he would really enjoy it. And we'll be there on a weeknight in March so it shouldn't be *as* crazy as a weekend or, say, July or August. But, because it's such a high profile place, they may have to be much stricter about the under 18 law.

But, again, I'm very relieved to know that there were places your 13 year old was able to hear music. We should definitely be able to find something with a 16 year old!
