Great sightseeing option in Lisbon

We were in the Lisbon area the week before last. We have been there several times before---all in our 70's.

When trip planning last fall I took note of a posting about Tuk Tuk (golf cart) tours in Lisbon. Given our age, this seemed like an excellent plan for us, and it would allow one of us to quickly get to know Lisbon, it's hills and narrow streets.

I contacted the owner, Joao via e-mail. He responded quickly with excellent English He explained his offerings to me, and offered customization if we wished. Over the winter the 3 of us discussed his offerings. In late winter I contacted him again for specifics. He offered us 2 plans which he thought would best fit our needs. We chose one. Later we chose the specific one we thought best---mid morning to late afternoon.

His tours are not cheap, but well worth the money. His English was fabulous and we never had to ask him to repeat anything. He took us up and down, in and out and in the golf cart we never missed one bump or hole in Lisbon's poorly repaired streets.

We did stop for maybe 45 minutes at a hillside park and enjoyed a clean toilet and delicious sandwiches.

He goes by "Joe" and is known as O Tuk do Joao. E-Mail: [email protected]

YOU WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED WITH HIS KNOWLEGE AND DRIVING SKILLS if you hire him. He is busy so don't wait until the last minute to book. No money upfront and cash during the tour is preferred.

On progol's ongoing trip report thread,
Portugal at last!

Sher and I were just discussing this tuk tuk operator, who is a former, much admired Fodorite, "Lobo Mau" (whom we miss very much) who gave us great tips about Lisbon and started the "Lisbon Dining Club" that several Fodorites visiting Lisbon enjoyed very much.

I intend to book one of his tours when we return to Lisbon In November.

I went to one of those Lisbon dining club gatherings in 2006 and have been friends with João ever since. It is one of the glorious connections I have made through Fodors. Back in the day he acted as an unofficial ambassador for Portugal through the Fodors community and now he has retired from his desk job and shares his enthusiasm by taking tourists around in the tuk tuk.

I remember Lobo Mao on Fodor’s and how helpful he was! I am saving this post for the excellent info it contains. Thanks rhkkmk for this post!
