Great food in sicily - Any specifics?
Hi, I'll be in Taormina and Siracusa (Ortygia) in April and I have heard that the food is great. Can anyone give me the names of restaurants that they have eaten at and enjoyed?
Also, we will be staying at the Villa Ducale in Taormina and I've been reading that there are a lot of steps to climb. Is there bus service available into town? How is the location of the hotel in general? What are the room like? It looks so pretty on their website.
Thanks for any info. Barb

In Siracusa, do not miss Don Camillo on Via Maestranza for fine Sicilian cuisine.
For something totally different, try Da Mariano (sorry, can't remember the street...) for very plain but very good Sicilian food at ridiculously low prices: abundant antipasto plate, lamb chops, a salad, and the house dessert of almond torrone and glazed orange peel with a half-liter of wine and a coffee for 14 Euro.

The address for Da Mariano is Vicolo Zuccola, which is not much help if you don't know what street it goes off from. In any case, it's fairly near the Fontana Aretusa.
And it has a Web site:

The pasta dishes, in particular, are very Sicilian; I didn't have one for the meal listed above because I had already had two or three in previous meals.
I'm not sure Da Mariano offers it, but to add to AP6380's list, you must try pasta con le sarde, one of the prototypical Sicilian dishes that show Arab influence: tomatoes, sardines, pine nuts, and raisins. (Pasta alla Norma is tomatoes and eggplant.)
And Sicilian pastries made with almonds are to die for. In Siracusa, Marciante (on a street off Piazza Aretusa or Piazza Duomo) has a large selection of wonderful ones as well as excellent cannoli.

The best meal I have had on each of my 3 visits to Taormina was at Maffei. Let the maitre guide you and bring a selection of starters - each more exquisite than the last. Il Duomo is also quite good but not in the same league. I agree about the seafood being fantastic - I never eat meat in Sicily.
