Thanks for the highlights everyone, will save and refer to them for sure. It is a lot more fun to check out the places that have been recommended than to not really know which direction to take.
We are hoping to find accommodation under $150 CDN per night. We don't require luxury, just clean (and a bathroom)!!

I love the idea of the coastal route from Edinburgh to York - looks like Bamburgh is a good stop over.

The train journey from Edinburgh to York is pretty good - the rail track hugs the coast in places and you can see Holy Island looking like it is floating in the sea.
But it all passes in a flash which is why I suggested the drive down to York. The A1 (Great North Road) should enable you to make good time, and you don't have to detour far to reach some lovely places.
Northumberland is beautiful, and Bamburgh would indeed be a good stop. Even if you decide not to go into the castle, you'll find it pretty amazing from the outside, especially if you walk along the beach.

With the current exchange rate $150 (£100) a night is a really good access point.

Good quality B & B s / small hotels are much cheaper in the UK than the State. There just isn't the premium pricing that some areas of the States seem to generate for B & B rates.

Do you have another month?

Your budget is fine everywhere -- but plan on a bit more in Edinburgh, and possibly in York depending on your dates. For the rest of your trip £80-£100 will get you very nice B&Bs.

For York and Edinburgh, booking.com is a good starting point. And I would definitely pre-book both cities.

Other places you can play it more on the fly. Local Tourist Info Centers can book you accommodations in your next stopover for a very small fee. You stop in - tell them where you are headed next, give them your requirements/budget -- and take off to sightsee. Return in a couple of hours and they will have found you a place and made your booking. Some TICs (mostly in the smallest towns) are seasonal -- but most paces you are going they are year-round. This is is a great service that saves time/angst search for someplace to sleep in a new town.

Found this other site http://www.hotels.uk.com which seems to avoid the additional booking fees..
