Most of the tours I have seen advertised in London are Ripper or garden walks.

Anyone have any pointers or recommendations?

There are MANY other choices other than the Ripper one and a few garden walks

Also - pick up a copy of Time Out when you arrive in London - it lists other walks. Plus - there are many "Walking in London"-type books w/ so many choices you'll have a hard time deciding . . . .

For example tours through the National Portrait museum, Artistic neighbourhoods, etc.

Some of the museums have tours at particular hours of the day, so you may want to check with specific museums.

I'm trying hard to imagine a city gourmet walking tour ...you walk past good restaurants and press your frozen little noses up against the window tp peer in at the priviledged eaters?

You could go to food shops/markets by yourself. It would be an awfully long walk to get around all the good ones in London in one go.

If you in town on a weekend try a walk around Borough market on the south bank (over London Bridge) A great organic type food market and some good restaurants (Roast is v. good for breakfast). You could then take a walk along the south bank to the OXO tower or Butlers Wharf both of which are close by and have a great selection of restaurants at all levels. You could also combine with a walk along to Tate Modern gallery which has a fine cafe.

Nona, in New York the "Foods of New York" gourmet walking tours are one of or possibly the highest rated walking tours in Manhattan.

Offered in all kinds of weather gourmet walking tours are done in cooperation with food stores and restaurants and include tasting. The above mentioned tour for example combines the tasting with historical information on the neighbourhood.

I recently came upon a book about gourmet and specialized food stores in London and it was frankly huge. So I was hoping there was a tour that accessed them.

You can also try Sotheby's and Christies for artistic talks; my wife, for instance, lectures regularly on Russian art (one time along with Prince Michael of Kent). Most are free, some charge.
