My favorites are Stonefly sandals and mary janes. Much more comfortable for me that Eccos.

Another secret for more comfort -- if it isn't too hot and you are wearing long pants, try support hose!! (I know, I know, you are saying "Eeeuw" but it's true.)

Thanks for all the recommendations! I have 4.5 months before I leave, so I'll be sure to check out the brands you suggested and get the shoes broken in. Thanks for the help!

Another good tip is be sure to have at least 2 pair. So you can switch mid-day, or at least alternate one day to the next. Even with great shoes wearing the same pair for days on end can get to you.

copper675,
I have a pair of Ecco's that are really comfortable and almost stylish. I got them from Zappos - http://www.zappos.com. They have a HUGE selection with unlimited ways to search for what you are looking for and have FREE SHIPPING BOTH WAYS.

There have also been several other threads on this board on the same subject.

One thing I might add to go along with the comfortable shoes is to be sure you have the proper socks. We did a lot of walking on our recent trip (I used a pedometer and we were well over 15 km a day for 18 days). The few days that I had sore feet at the end of the day had more to do with my socks than the shoes. I started to wear 2 pairs of socks in my north face runners and my problems disappeared.

Does anyone have an opinion about Cole Haans? A little late to ask, as I ordered a pair of Air Beau sneakers, in black, but they were on sale, so I took a chance.

cathies,
Thanks a lot for that tip. I hate cold, but that makes sense for swollen feet.

I have Mephistos that I swear by. Like others here, I have various foot problems that this particular shoe corrects for, so what works for me might not for others - as is true of all shoe brands. The shoes I get cost close to $300, but they are the only shoes I can walk in all day and not get sore feet, so I consider them a good investment of funds.

I have tried them all I have problem feet. Love stylish shoes too! Must try HELLE COMFORT BY ROMU!!!!! Made in Spain, very comfortable and nice looking too. CK the web for them...even Amazon carries some at discount. I like them better than ECCO and they are not as exp as Mephisto.

Lucygirl, that's a good tip for sore feet. I will try that too. Two pairs of socks is a good idea, I do that here just for my fitness walking, generally one fine pair and one of normal sport socks.
