Good Stop between Freiburg and Paris?

Mom and Sister are taking the train from Basel to Paris on July 29. Is there a good stop between the two cities for an overnight?

Thank you.

Not sure if you are starting from Freiburg (title), or Basel (body), but either way, these aren't particularly long train trips (B-P 5hrs. F-P 6.5hrs.), any reason they MUST break it?

Yes, they are fine with doing the direct trip, but just wondering if there was anything interesting along the way.

So, is it Freiburg or Basel?

Between Basel and Paris, certainly Freiburg is worthwhile, also Strasbourg and Colmar are very worthwhile stops (the language is French but the architecture and food is German)

Strasbourg would be an interesting stop if they want to do some sightseeing along the way.

Since I've visited Strasbourg I'll recommend it. It's a very nice place with both the French and German influences.
