Good pubs and cafes in Salzburg?
Wondering what there is to do in the way of pubs and cafes in Salzburg. Will only be there a short time, but would like to know some quaint pubs or watering holes.
Our idea of fun is cafe sitting by day, people watching, and beer swilling by night, ideally in places that are not exclusively "tourist."
We are staying in Old Town area....any ideas in that neighborhood are appreciated. or not too far across teh river. Espcailly if they have cool views of the river or fort.
Thanks for your input,
BK

We had a real fun evening at a place called Zum Fidelen Affen (the Faithful Ape), a traditional Austrian beer hall restaurant. Most of the tables are the long, share with others type, and the beer flows all night, along with lots of sauerkraut, dumplings, and sausage. There are also outside tables in warm weather. It's just a short walk across the river from the Old Town (actually a more authentic interesting area than the old town).
Another fun place was the Augustinian beer hall with it's huge outdoor beer garden, where you fill your own mugs with delicious amber beer. Bring your own food, or you can buy it at the vendor tables inside.

There's a Irish pub in the old section, but right across from the river. There was live music sometimes, lots of Austrians and bags of tourists too. It's a fun place. BUT, I don't remember the name. Certainly this wouldn't be hard to find-there's not a lot of Irish pubs in Salzburg.

For coffe, two places come to mind:
The Cafe Winler overlooks the city. Great view of the castle and the cathdreal and the old part, as well as the surrounding hills opposite of the river. You can drive up to it or take the elevator inside the mountain; the entrance is close to the Felsenreitschule.
My favorite is the Cafe Glockenspiel. It is next to the cathedral, on the side away from the castle. It has an upstairs terrace and excellent pastries, Eisbecher (sort of a super rich sundae, often with booze) and a nice view of the fountain in the square in front of it.
One correction to zooti's posting. "Fidel" mean happy; so the beerhall is called the equivalent of "At the The Happy Monkey".

Happy sure doesn't correct.
fidelity n. [Obedience] 1. veracity, truthfulness, frankness, truth, sincerity, candor, honesty plain dealing, bona fides Latin, probity 2. obedience, observance, compliance, submission, subjection, passiveness, resignation, allegiance, loyalty, fealty, homage, deference, submissiveness, obsequiousness, servility
Do you remember the Marine's motto - Fidel Siempre - I think. Have you ever met a happy marine.
So what does this leave the monkey. Maybe obedient would be closer. Again, obedient might be wrong for a monkey, as well.
Confusing!
Time for an eisbecher.

While in Salzburg last New Years we stayed at the Hotel Goldener Ente in old town. It had a restaurant/bar on the ground floor that was well attended by locals. In the afternoons it was jammed with folks having a pleasant drink and some chat. Stop in, I think you'd like it.

And now for more info about the translation of Fidelen Affen...
We were there the end of July and asked the waiter (named "Cheese" - it's embroidered on his pocket and we did ask about it) what it meant...his translation was "The Funky Monkey"! It might not be in the dictionary, but I like it

Being originally from Germany, in good German fashion I must have the last word (There is a German word for that, too: Rechthaber)
From Cassell's German- English dictionary: "fidel"- merry, jolly. So, instaed of the "Happy Monkey" wuold you settle for "Merry Monkey"?
Thast doesn't mean that the Marine motto is "Always Merry".

Best Cafes: Glockenspiel and Tomaselli.
Pubs/Bars: I used to love Winkler's, but it closed down a number of years back when it was demolished to build a museum. If it's been reopened--give it a try.
If not, two pub-like places good for people watching are the Stieglbrau restaurant/beer hall half way up toward the fortress (great views, good food and lots of good beer) and the Augustiner brewery/beer gardens not far from the Altstadt.
