Geoff: Basel, my home town! If you are interested in modern art, don't miss the Fondation Beyeler in Riehen. A must. Right now a Mark Rothko exhibition. The permanent collection is great too. www.beyeler.com
Tram Nr. 6 from the city center to the stop "Riehen-Dorf".
Also, the Tinguely Museum, great and a lot of fun. www.tinguely.ch
In town. You can walk along the Rhine from tram stop Wettsteinplatz, Tram Nr. 2.
You'll find a lot of useful info at Basel's official website: www.baseltourismus.ch (English site too).
Don't miss the old part of the city with the Rathaus and the Münster, the Museum of Fine Arts. Walk up the Spalenberg off Marktplatz. Very scenic with narrow streets.
Within one or two hours or a little more, you will be in Berne, Lucerne, Zurich, Solothurn. Interlaken would be some 2h30min. though. Have a nice stay!

We had a weather interuption of a Rhine Cruise some years back and wound up in Basel for four days. We trained to Lucerne one of the days. It was magnificent!!! I don't remember how long it took, but remember it as an easy train ride and a wonderful city. don't miss it!
