Any good inexpensive hotels for Florence, Rome and Venice.

Sally - the more info you give on the board the better the answers. You really need to give a price range as inexpensive means different things. Some people think inexpensive is $250 per night. You also didn't add that you want triple rooms - makes a difference as not all hotels have triples.

Here's an inexpensive 1 bedroom apartment I stayed in - very centrally located near Campo dei Fiori - 140 Euro. It's noisy at night because of the Vespas but that doesn't bother me.

This is a really nice hotel near the train station. It was renovated a few years ago and the staff is very pleasant. Ask for a room at the back. The rate for triples drops on Nov 1 to 100 Euro - what a bargain!

Here's a 1 star in Venice. Ask for a room on the canal. It looks a bit threadbare but is clean.

You might want better accommodations but you only said inexpensive.

I suggest you get a copy of Let's Go guidebooks for Venice, Florence, and Rome and take a look at their accommodation section. I've used these guidebooks for years and their higher priced recommendations have been good value.

a triple. Would prefer a private bath but could share. Around a $100 would be great , 3 or 4 nites per place. As long as its clean , we would take it. You are right though , $250 a nite would not be cheap for us. Thanks for all the suggestions.

$100 is only 72 Euro/night (at current exchange rates). That's going to be very very difficult for a triple in high season. Here's your best bet for Rome, other than a hostel. Very very clean; very very small rooms.

Go to the thorntree site on the Lonely Planet board. It caters to students and people on tight budgets. Look at low end recommendations from Let's Go and also look at hostelworld.com for hostels.

In Rome you can try to get a convent room (they often have curfews). There's a book called Bed and Blessings or go to the Santa Suzanna web site (this is the American Catholic church in Rome) where they have recommendations for convent stays.

The other option is to stay outside the cities but that would be my last choice as you'll spend too much time commuting into the sights and I feel you lose something by not staying in the cities such as the option to return to your room easily to relax in the late afternoon or to pickup something you've left behind.

The good news is that breakfast is almost always included in the room price in Italy.

You should research monastery/convent accommodation. Try www.monasterystays.com, we used them for Rome and they have accommodation in your $ range. Nothing glamorous, but clean and comfortable, breakfast included. You don't have to be Catholic or even religious (respectful of course!).

I agree with Adrienne that you do want to stay within the city limits. I didn't realise how far out our convent was until I had booked and paid, and it was a nuisance.

Better possibilities in the off season. Is that when you're going?

Monastery Stays is great for finding convents, but they markup the prices (10-15€ per night) so it's better to contact the convent directly to book.

Im staying in a double room at the Hotel Ai Do Mori right near St Marks Square for just 50 euro per night. Its nothing fancy but then neither is my budget lol!!! It has a private bathroom as well.

I dont know what price they can offer for triple but it might be worth asking. The other place I stayed at in Venice was a lovely B&B but it was 140 euro per night, the Al Teatro B&B.

I know a really nice B&B right between Campo De'Fiori and Piazza Navona that has rates starting from E95/night for a single (during low season it can cost as little as E75/night for a single), and they are open to cash discounts as well. When people come to visit me, the owners have always treated them very well, and my guests have been happy. The rooms are all uniquely decorated, and have all the normal amenities like a/c and satellite tv (some of the older relatives demand English speaking channels) and en suite bathrooms. Sally, when I was younger two girlfriends and I rented a small apartment in Trastevere in Rome from cross-pollinate.com. I don't see the same apartment listed nowadays, but they have a wide assortment of apartments and B&Bs. They're reliable--nothing fancy, of course. Good luck!
