Golden Sands

I'm going to Golden Sands in Bulgaria for 2 weeks in June. Has anyone any information on the Black Sea resort and surrounding areas? What's the nightlife like? Staying in the Astoria Palace Hotel. Anyone been there before?

Write to the Bulgarian tourist office, 545 West 59th Street, New York City, NY 10076-0799 and ask for tourist brochures and information on Bulgaria. Mention Golden Sands or any other place you are especially interested in. You will find the Black Sea area in June to be just at the beginning of the tourist season, so not very crowded. You will also find that Golden Sands is one of those tourist resort areas created just for tourism, and thus a bit devoid of other character in the immediate area. But you will find Bulgaria overall to be a very interesting country if you can explore. Good luck.

Thanks, Wayne. I live in London so I'll approach the Bulgarian tourist board here and see what they can give me. Many thanks for your reply. I'm not fussed about it not having much character, I just want to chill out and relax on the beach.

I been two years and will be back for a conference this year at the end of May. The resort is nice and reasonable. Plan to get to downtown Varna. The resturants are better and cheaper and the shopping is better at the market area. I would plan to see Nessebur and Balchick. Both are an easy day trip. I would be happy to answer questions that my limited knowledge covers. I also have local contacts that help me avoid the pitfalls of travel in Eastern Europe.

I have just returned from a two weeks holiday in Golden Sands in Bulgaria, booked through Balkan Holidays. I had a great time there - I thought it was probably one of the nicest beach holiday destinations I have been to. It was very, very clean, the resort had masses of trees, shrubs and plants everywhere, and the beach was very long and very wide. There was plenty of things to do for all ages from 8 to 80. There was no element of loutishness in the people's behaviour - unlike some other resorts that I have visited. I felt perfectly safe there at any time of the day or night. There are loads of bars/pubs/clubs and restaurants to pick from - and they are all very cheap by British standards (I live in london, by the way) If you are looking for a holiday with a traditional town square and oldie-worldie little streets then Golden Sands is definately N O T the place for you, but if you are just looking - like I imagine most holidaymakers are - for a nice, clean, cheap place with a great beach and loads of places to eat and drink, lots of things to do in the evening - (nothing cultural - but what the hell who wants culture when you're on holiday) then I would recommend Golden Sands to anyone. We stayed in a 4 Star Hotel (The Palm Beach) on a B and B basis - There was a good choice of food, and the hotel was a/c throughout. So if you are thinking of going on holiday there - Go for it. Hope you have a nice time.
