Glacier Express Train

We are considering a trip in July that would include a ride from Zermatt to st. Moritz on the Glacier Express train. Has anyone done this? Please comment on the ride . Was it worth dpending 8 hours on a train? Also any tips, suggestions for Zermatt and St. Moritz in July. What is the weather like thre in July? Thanks Diane

We did this and it was wonderful. Take your own food and a bottle of wlne so you do not miss the scenery while eating in the expensive dining car. Make sure you get an observation car ticket. I would go again in a heart beat

Diane,

Can't offer any advice re: the Glacier Express, but if you want to visit both St. Moritz & Zermatt, it's the fastest connection...

Both places are spectacular in the summer, especially if you enjoy hiking. My advice would be to schedule your trip as late in the summer as possible - mid August would be ideal. In my experience, rainy weather is more likely in July than in August. I would also advise booking hotels with indoor pools so that you have something to do on a bad weather day.

Wasn't too happy with the place I stayed at near St. Moritz (Hotel Walther in Pontresina) but can recommend the Hotel Mirabeau in Zermatt (stayed there numerous times). The Hotel Nicoletta is also absolutely fine. In both places, you definitely want to book a room with a view of the Matterhorn.

For a superb (and expensive) meal, go to Jöhri's Talvo near St. Moritz. Food is out of this world and service is great!

Hope this helps,
Andre

We took the Glacier Express in the summer, 2000, from west to east. It was enjoyable, but wished it had been winter when the Alps would have been covered with snow. The scenery was not nearly as beautiful as the north side of the Alps (the Berner Oberland, etc.). That's just our opinion.

Regards,

Jinx Hoover

I agree with Andre on Hotel Mirabeau in Zermatt. A wonderful hotel. I also can recommend Hotel Monte Rosa. It has more old-world charm.

For St. Moritz: a good choice for Glacier Express travellers is the four star Hotel La Margna, only a few steps from the railway station. www.lamargna.ch The three star Hotel Waldhaus am See is located in about 200 m distance from the railway station, quiet, on the lake with beautiful views. www.waldhaus-am-see.ch (German only)

For a longer stay I recommend staying outside St. Moritz, maybe in Sils. Hotel Waldhaus is a jewel (though expensive) www.waldhaus-sils.ch

My experiences with the weather are different from Andre's: It was pouring in August and I had 11 days pure sunshine within 2 weeks in late June/early July. But also a day with snow down to the valley floor ...

The Glacier Express is IMO not nearly as spectacular as the Bernina Express e.g. 8 hours can be very, very long ... Take a book with you or hope that you have nice company. Some spectacular parts (Oberalp Pass, Albula route) followed by quite boring parts. IMO you should make reservations for the dining car, because the food is quite good and it is a nice for a change to your seats.

Ingo
