Giverny Ticket in Advance?

If you were going to be in Paris in early May, would you buy an entry ticket in advance when they become available online in March, or just hold out for a beautiful Spring day once you are in Paris?

Thanks.

That's a tough one and this is my one last thing I still need to do when in Paris! I think I would pre-purchase, but if I am there when Giverny is open..then it's a priority and I would be going rain or shine.

I'll be following this to see what those in the know advise!

One big problem -- if it IS a nice day every other visitor will also be trying to buy tix/visit.

I actually prefer the gardens when a little overcast or there is a light shower.

Now, pouring down in sheets -- maybe not so great. But a typical Spring shower is no issue IMO.

What is your fear about buying in advance? There is a small fee, but the entire ticket plus fee is only about 11-12 euro online. And it isn't for a specific date, anyway, so you are afraid you will lose 11 euro because of the chance that the weather will be so bad your entire trip that you won't want to go? Versus having a ticket in advance and not having to queue?

that would be an easy one for me in terms of risk, if I had decided I really wanted to see Giverny on my trip, I'd buy in advance with the very slight chance the weather would be so bad I could lose that 11 euro.

I think the OP thought she needed to book a certain time slot to visit the gardens.

I dont remember the ticket line being particularly long and I have been in April and May. The line for the train ticket at Gar Lazare was long!

The tickets cost 9.50€ and can be bought on the official Monet's garden website and printed at home. They are not date specific and can be used any day of this season. They can also be bought at FNAC stores in Paris and maybe a few other places. It is always a good idea to buy in advance to avoid potentially long ticket lines on site. With advanced purchase tickets you use the pre-purchased ticket entry and don't need to wait in line to enter.

We visited Giverny in early May on a beautiful spring day after several days of rain. The line to buy the tickets was almost an hour long, so I would say buy them in advance. It was a highlight of our trip. Before going, I studied up on Monet's paintings picking out those that were painted at Giverny, or at least those that I thought were. I then tried to spot the places and when I could, stand where Monet would have stood when painting them. That made it all the more interesting.

TD, I hadn't noticed that you are the OP. Have a wonderful trip, and yes, get that ticket in advance and go! You will not regret visiting Giverny.

Yes, buy in advance and then pick a nice day to visit and get there early (or late).

If you are going to the Musee Marmottan, They sell a combination ticket which saves a few euros.

That is correct, KodakMoment. Thanks Christina and FrenchMT for clarifying that the tickets are not date-specific--I did wonder about it as many tickets are for popular sites are timed.

Belinda, I'll be sure to get train tickets in advance also. I'll find out if my new Capital One chip card works!

Hi basie, and what a wonderful idea. I'll study Monet works asap! BTW, have you (everyone) been to Grounds for Sculpture in NJ? Seward Johnson's life-sized models of Impressionists' works are astounding.

DH and I did get to Marmottan, yestravel, but that's good info to share here.

Thanks to all, TDude.

Today is opening day for ticket purchasing and I have a problem. I have sent them an email query but in the meantime, let me ask you "guys".

To purchase an online ticket, one needs to provide a mobile phone number and I can't seem to write mine in a way their system accepts. Yes, I have used the US code. I even copied the Monet Foundation number and they didn't like that.

Any suggestions?

When we visited Monet's house and garden in May, we took an early train from Paris. Upon arrival, instead of taking the bus with all the other visitors, we hopped in a taxi from the train station. We were the first ones there when they opened. It was wonderful wandering through the house and gardens before the throngs of visitors or tour buses. You will enjoy your trip there, I'm sure! Hope this tidbit helps.

Thanks, dorkforcemom. Do you remember how much it cost?

A kind person at the Monet Foundation emailed very quickly back. She suggested I wait and buy the ticket in France or use the number of a friend. I actually did try the foundation's number and it still didn't work. I'm going to try the hotel where I'm staying next--didn't think of that.

I copied and pasted my hotel's tel num and its format was deemed incorrect also. Will wait until I get to France.

Wow, I haven't been there for about 10 years now, so this thread is a real shocker to me. In the four or five times I went I don't think I was ever in a line to buy tickets, usually arriving about opening time in the morning and just walking up and buying them.

There isn't any big worry about buying them the date they are available online as they are not date-specific. So they don't sell out.

Sometimes I just make up phone numbers on websites, it doesn't matter that much as people never call you. I always make them up when it is some charity as I don't want them calling me. They can't tell if it is a real number or not. Mobile phone numbers if France look different than real ones, that's probably why putting in the Fondation's number didn't work.

If you want to make one up, it has to be a ten digit number that begins with 06. IN fact, I just tried it on Digitick and it worked fine, I just made up a number (they wouldn't accept 0655555555 though as they said it was already taken, no kidding).

If you want them to have your real phone number, this is how you do it--you have to put +1 as that is the international dialing code from France to US, then your 10 digit US phone number. That works, I just tried it and it accepted it. if your US phone number is 202-123-4567, for example, you put this in the Digitick box:

+1-2021234567

You can always buy tickets at a FNAC store in Paris, of course, a day or two ahead of your visit. Since they aren't date specific and you are worried about weather, that seems like a possibly good idea, although it does require a separate trip to FNAC and possibly a line wait there but not usualy much. I'm always around a FNAC where I usuallys stay anyway, but some people aren't. YOu can buy online from FNAC, also, maybe they have different registration rules.

Thanks, Christina! I will try (maybe re-try--I played around with various iterations!) the above configuration and FNAC online.

Upon trying the +1-etc. number, "The "Tel. Mobile" field is incorrect (format)." came up again. Off the FNAC.
