Getting to Brno (from the USA)

Hello!
I need to get from Chicago to Brno and don't see any direct flights. It looks like the fastest/easiest option might be to fly into Vienna and then take the train.

Does anyone have any insight here or know of better options?

Thanks!

I do know that Brno doesn't have much of an airport and was told that it's because most flights go into Bratislava. The one time I was there there were no flights arriving or departing and the rental car desks were gated. The information booth was closed. There were about 4 people in the airport and I was one of them. This was around 9:00 AM during the week. It was spooky.

Vienna or Bratislava are good options.

I took train from Prague to Brno. Easy. A phrase book is very handy in Brno.

Thanks - we'll go into Vienna and take the train(s) from there. Too bad there are so many connections!

Where are you looking? I just pulled up the train schedule for Vienna to Brno and most trains have no connections or 1 connection and take anywhere from 2 hours to 3.25 hours.

Two bus companies go direct from Vienna airport to Brno.
Maybe they fit into your schedule.

Cowboy1968, thanks for the bus schedule! It'll be a tight 30 min transfer from plane to bus, but maybe we could make it...

Adrienne,
I looked on bahn.de. If I do a search on Sept 5 at 5pm from "VIE Vienna Airport" to "Brno hl.n." then I get results all showing 2 changes. I also noticed that it changes my departure station to "Flughafen Wien" which seems to be the same as the airport.

The itineraries look like this:
Flughafen Wien (CAT) City Airport Train
Additional ticket required, not included in the indicated ticket price

Flughafen Wien (CAT - City Airport Train) to Wien Mitte-Landstraße (~15 min)

walk 5 min.

Wien Mitte to Breclav (Regionalzug) (~80 min)

Transfer time 7 min.

Breclav to Brno hl.n. (Eurocity) (~30 min)

I was looking at the schedules from Vienna to Brno and didn't account for travel from the airport into the city (probably because you never mentioned not going into Vienna but leaving from the Vienna airport). I thought you would sightsee in Vienna and then go to Brno but I guess that's not happening. Sorry. Perhaps you should try for the bus.

I see, thanks Adrienne!

We'll plan to buy the bus tickets once we're at the airport unless anyone sees any reason to buy them in advance. It doesn't seem like they would sell out...

I'm sure you'll be fine buying the tickets when you get to Vienna. Brno is not a hot spot!!

Hi - Just wanted to report back to future travelers that taking the bus (Student Agency) was super easy from the Vienna airport to Brno. Tickets were sold out for the return trip though, but the train connection route worked out...even though it required some connections.
