We really wanted to go but being dark skinned there is the potential for trouble. also do you really want to be there and be worried or scared that something may happen. This is not my idea of a vacation. we also have a young daughter and do not want to risk anything.

What makes you think you're safe where you are right now? The number of "racially motivated crime" in Germany is negligable compared to that in the US... (assuming you live there) But hey you're know what you're doing... Have fun!

Actually we live in Canada. The problem is we dont want to be in fear having people look at us, and know they dont want us there. Furthermore the will percieve us as foreigners or immigrants and this may cause problems. I know its really sad but what can you do.

Just keep in mind that those fears are in your imagination and anything but rational. You can't change the way you feel. Montreal is a great place if you travelled to Germany you would find that it's just as safe and racists can be anywhere on the planet. Maybe later...

I have never travelled in the former East Germany and can not speak to that area.
I am mostly white and my wife is mostly black. I have lived 6 years in Germany as part of an intergrated marriage. My wife was there another 3 years as a dependent child. We just returned for a 10 day vacation.
I do not believe that we ever suffered from overt discrimination as a couple. Some Germans are prejudice, just as are some of us on the N.A. continent. I have seen a small bit of unfortunate graffiti against Turks. But, it was pretty mild stuff.
There might be cities to avoid which I know not, but I would not avoid all of Germany.
Good Luck and Regards, Gary

I did not see a recent increase of violence in East Germany. (I live in Dresden.) I see hundreds of Asians, Africans and Arabians every day and none of those seems to share your concerns. I cannot really understand your decision, but if you don't feel comfortable doing this trip you better cancel it.

Dear M,
Is this the incident to which you are referring? http://tinyurl.com/p5d8v
If so, it appears to be an isolated incident involving people who were drunk.
You might wish to reconsider.
