Germany specialists - need your help

I will be attending few WC matches, specifically few knockout games and 1 semi as well as the final in Berlin. The knockout stages will be in the western part of Germany and the final is in Berlin. At the moment I have reservation at what I think is a very centrally located hotel in Weimar. It's a Hilton so I also get to collect few points and it helps in my status retaining, plus it's very reasonable at ~100Euro a night all in. I will have 2-3 days between games so it's not like I need to travel everyday. I will also buy a WC train pass with unlimited travel to any game city and I don't mind spending 2-3 hours on a train before and after the game.

So, is Weimar a good choice? or should I reserve hotels in the cities of the games played and then pack/unpack when I need to move on?

Leipzig is the only World Cup site that is really close to Weimar. You are looking at at least 2.5 hours to Berlin or Frankfurt and 4 or more hours to Hamburg, Munich, Dortmund, etc.

Your main problem will be that with the games late in the day (some start at 9 p.m.) you might not be able to get a train back to Weimar until the next morning.

Why don't you post a list of the games you want to attend at then ask for suggestions for where to stay.

I just looked at the schedule for the tickets I have and I just realized I don't have the final game, but here is what I have:

June 26 - knockout
Kaiserslautern @17:00

June 27 - knockout
Dortmund @17:00

July 4 - semi1
Dortmund @21:00

July 5- semi2
Munich @21:00

so now I'm thinking that Weinmar may be a good base for the first 2 games but then move on to Dortmund a day before the 3rd game and to Munich for the 4th game(a long travel day). Unfortunately my flight from FRA is on 7th early in the morning, so another long travel day next morning on the 6th back to FRA.

The reason for staying in Weimar is 2 fold, price and Hilton points/status buildup so I don't mind the r/t train trips as long as they may be on game days. Moving to Dortmund for 2 nights for the 1st semi and Munich for 1 night for the second semi and Frankfurt for the night before flight seems to be the way to go after leaving Weinmar.

Do you agree?

BTW, thanks for the suggestion and help. It forced me to actually look at locations, dates and realize that staying in Weinmar for the entire time was not a good idea. Also, I'm still open for suggestions.

I think you left out your first game, if Dortmund is the third one.

Dortmund to Munich would be your longest train trip: about 6 hours. Munich to Frankfurt is about 3:45 on the fastest trains.

I hate to rain on your parade, but I think Weimar is a fairly bad choice for the locations you want to visit.
You are looking at at least 4 to 5 hours of train travel to about anywhere you want to go - and that is one way.
Double that plus the time of the match plus the time you have to factor in in order to get into the stadium (do be prepared to be on location at least 90 min. before the start of the match as ticket and security checks are going to be tight - and you are looking at very lomg days. If you are staying that far from the matches, you will also miss a lot of the festive atmosphere at the venues and the city around it. I would definitely start looking in closer vicinities of the venues!

Weimar is nowhere near any of the games you will be seeing, and not even centrally located if you aren't going to Berlin.

You have only a day between Kaiserslautern and Dortmund, then only a day between Dortmund and Munich, so those days will be spent travelling between venues. But unless you have left something out, you will have a week to spend between matches in Dortmund. That will give you enough time to go into Belgium and/or Holland as well as seeing the industrial heartland of Germany.
