Germany - Seeking pensions/castle hotels
We are driving from Frankfurt, then northward along the Rhine, then head eastward ending in Berlin in early Nov. for 10 days. Can anyone recommend a castle type hotel along the Rhine? Also, any B&Bs/pensions/hasthauser to recommend between Koln and Berlin? Thank you!

I stayed at this Castle-hotel in November 2004 and the prices were very, very reasonable for a November stay. If you can ask for a room close to the ramparts. You can step from the room to the ramparts around the castle, so amazing with the Mosel River views. Breakfast was really good as well.

Have stayed at several castle-hotels in the Middle Rhine area and agree 100% with the other posters that Auf Schoenbrug at Oberwesel will give you the quintessential 'castle' experience without it being 'plastic', overly touristy or pretentious. We have stayed several times in Room #38 (see 'Rooms' on their web site http://www.hotel-schoenburg.com/ This 'room' is actually a small house near the entrance to the courtyard. It is totally private, quiet and spacious. It's actually a mini-suite. Not all rooms at Schoenburg have a view to the River. Room #38 has a small view via windows above the bed! You'll likely not spend too much time gazing at the River, however! (Schoenburg is on the Rhine River, NOT the nearby Mosel, as suggested by a previous poster!)
Be apprised that some rooms at Schoenburg are reached via rather steep, narrow stairways and rampart walkways. Not so with Room #38. Look at all the rooms on their web site as they're all quite different! Schoenburg has a 'luggage man' who will bring a small tractor and cart to the car park near the drawbridge and bring your luggage etc. to your room and then back again upon your departure.
The optional Reisling Wine Dinner and vineyard tour offered by Schoenburg is educational, interesting, delicious and again, not particularily touristy.
Although it's difficult to imagine what other people expect out of such an experience I sincerely think that the Schoenburg experience will be what most people would dream of in a 'Castle' experience.
