I agree that it is important to learn about and discuss that era, the ideology, and the phenomenons that made it possible, in particular in our times with neofascism, racism, and right-wing nationalism on the rise in many countries, including, sadly, mine where people really ought to know better.
However, especially with a child, one does not have to start with 'hardcore' as introduction to the topic. There are alternatives to visiting an actual concentration camp. Many historical museums have very good permanent exhibitions about the Nazi era, which are informative but certainly easier to digest than visiting the most gruesome sites of all. I cannot tell about the new historical museum in Frankfurt because I have not yet visited. I know that the one at Deutsches Historisches Museum in Berlin is excellent. There are many more. You may, for example, consider a day trip to Nuremberg.
