Germany aug 31-sept 11 (maybe 1 Austrian city)

My husband and I (Nashville) and mid-20's son (Atl) are planning a 10 day trip to include Munich and Berlin and maybe Salzburg or Vienna. Any tips on air travel (leAst number of stops and low fares) appreciated. Trying to stay w/ Delta but may consider other airlines if there are deals. Berlin and Vienna don't go direct to Atl. Munich does, but is it expensive. What about going into Amsterdam then taking a train to Berlin? Hoping to buy tix this week.

Focus will be experiencing the culture, wwII history, food and wine and a bit of the countryside. I have Fodors books and am beginning to read.

Would you rec'd doing only on the 2 major German cities and save Austria for another time w/ only 10 days and not wanting to rush? Perhaps a side trip from Munich or Berlin to a German city not destroyed by war? I do realize Salzburg is a short train ride from Munich. Is crossing the border no big deal?

Son has been studying the German language since January and he is looking forward to lots of practice.

We will aim to use trains vs rental car and I have seen a post to support that.

(1) Landshut and Regensburg wuold be a good choice. The are accessible by train from Munich easily. (2) You will realize when you cross the border

To land at a random airport many hours away from where you ant to be is a really bad idea when you already have so little time. (Amsterdam to Berlin is about 6.5 hours by train - so wasting a whole day.)
