Hi 111op-
I did fly Germanwings and it was great. They are a no frills airline (buy your own drinks and snacks) and they were either early or right on time according to their schedule. I was very impressed.
Unfortunately, I have not used them since 2003 so I hope what I've provided you hasn't changed all that much!

I took a 2 hrs flight from Cologne to Prague in Oct 04 for 30 euros. I was very satisified with everything. The check-in was efficient, and the flight was just like any other regular-fare airlines, with the exception that you don't get any snacks/drinks onboard unless you pay.
There is no seating assignment. I was with the last group to get on but still found plenty of aisle seats. On my flight, couples tended to sit together in the window/middle seats. So it wasn't like people who board late only had middle seats left.
Overall a pleasant experience and great value for the $$.

Since I asked about some questions, I'm reporting that my Cologne to Lisbon flight went well.
Free seating (board by numbers, I think). The carryon policy was relatively strict, so we checked one of the bags, if I recall.
No surprises. You also have to pay for refreshments, if I remember correctly. I guess that's all standard procedure for the budget airlines now.
