George the Greek Taxi Driver

Based on advice we got on this site and other web sites we contracted with George to use his services in Greece. During the day, the driver asked us "Why don't you Americans just fight the Mexicans and Blacks and leave the rest of the world alone". Use your own judgement, but never again for us.

Come on, Winston, you must be making this up. A European that does not hug his fellow man, that offers provicial bigotry up in his conversation? Not in the Europe that the Fodorites visit!

Ah, wait--there's an answer: He must have been born in the Evil US of A.

I guess I don't get your point, Winston. Are you just surprised that all the bigots in the world don't live in the US? One thing I've learned from travel is that there are all kinds of people in all parts of the world. So the driver ended up being an opinionated guy. So?

And all taxi drivers in America aren't ignorantly opinionated, Winston? I wouldn't ban the driver, George, or George's other drivers for this comment. If someone says something offending, speak up and give them your opinion. The opinion was not bright but at at least it gave you a chance to "talk" with a Greek (who doesn't represent all Greeks) and get their actual opinion rather than a tourist package response. Would you rather George tell all his drivers to shut up or lie about their actual opinions just to please the tourists so that the tourist can think Greece likes America being militarily involved in Europe & MiddleEast. I'd rather know how Greeks actually feel.

greek society is rather peculiar in that it is so homogenous, almost "inbred", although not quite outroight xenophobic. If you are asian, or hispanic, or black, you will be made to feel "different".

The best lesson my teenage son could have learned of the benefits of diversity, was the couple of weeks we spent in greece. There was a boring sameness to the food, the newspapers, and the editorial opinions. the greeks tend to scapegoat the US and western europe for all their self inflicted, socialistic ills.

Try having a Jewish last name in some of these countries ! Winston, wake up, and smell the bigots! everywhere you go, whatever you do, there are more than enough ignorant people that want to give you their advice/views on things.I have heard some doozies from white English cabbies in London,so the beaten down homogenous Greek isn't unique.Best advice is, don't have conversations with the cab driver..
