Gasthaus between Munich and Innsbruck

We are traveling from northern Germany through Munich in June. Will we have a problem finding a small Gasthaus between Munich and Innsbruck. I know there are many along the Autobahn. With previous trips (when single) in the area I never had a problem. Now with my family I would hate to be stuck without a room. We would rather not reserve if not too risky. We enjoy taking our time and simply driving untl we get tired. Thanks

Have never seen any Gasthaus by the side of the Autobahn. they're in the towns or along the smaller local roads. How many are you - is one from enough? Is your budget flexible?

If not I would reserve in advance.

You are correct. I should have said the small towns near the Autobahn. Three of us will be traveling. The budget is flexible to an extent. I'm not sure if the rates in Germany are higher for "walk-in" business. I know in the US you will get charged full "rack" rate in many cases.

Any place in the area will have good vale for money accomodation; you may well choose a place at randome by throwing a dart on a map and staying there. In June you are going to find all the place you want. I suggest you to try the mountain itinerary, Munich-Garmisch-Mittenwald-Seefeld-Innsbruck; any of these places would be a good place to stay. Beware the very steep road going down from Seefeld to the Inn valley.
Along the river itinerary Erl in Tirol could be a good stop. On a small detour, Aschau in Chiemgau is a very nice place.

I agree with the route suggested above: Munich-Garmisch-Mittenwald-Seefeld-Innsbruck.

As for: "I'm not sure if the rates in Germany are higher for "walk-in" business. I know in the US you will get charged full "rack" rate in many cases.

Look for Gasthof's, Pension's and Garni's. You'll save a lot over hotels plus a breakfast buffet is usually included.

I do not believe rates would be lower if you reserve. Another possible alternative is watching for signs "Zimmer frei" (free room) on private homes, often they are good value for money and usually include breakfast.

Another possibility is addressing a local tourist office (Verkehrsamt), they usually have a list of accomodation and sometimes can reserve for you.

Another option is looking for the sign "Zimmer frei" (free room) on private homes, they often are good value for money and include breakfast. Speaking a little German sometimes works wonders.

The local tourist office (Verkehrsamt) usually can give lists of accomodation by category (sometimes you can download them from internet web sites), sometimes they can even reserve for you. I do not believe you get a lower price if you reserve, it is just for your peace of mind.
