That VAT on rental cars is one of the big reasons sometimes people say one place is so much cheaper than others. More than one person has scoffed at AutoEurope for example, only later to find their "bargain" company didn't include the VAT, while AutoEurope's quote did.

Hi Cosmo,

Yesterday I paid 1.22 E/l for gazol on the A60 near Carcassone.

Essence was 1.48

Prices range from 1.08 to 1.36 for gazol. Essence is from 0.04 to 0.45 E/l more.

I dont understand the references to the different types. We just have Premium Leaded or Leaded or Unleaded (almost phased out.
What should I be filling up with in France (what is the cheapest ok one called?)
thanks again

Cosmo, they're like cricket terms:

gazol = diesel
essence = regular unleaded gasoline

There is also a premium unleaded, but I can't remember what it is called in France.

If you rent a diesel, it will probably have a little sticker on the filler door that says "diesel," but to be on the safe side, ask the rental agent what type of fuel it uses.

Just filled up today with 92 octane premium here in Central Mexico for $ $7.53 MXN/liter - about $2.664 US/US gallon.
Nice to live in a petrol producing country.
