When getting fuel at a large self-serve area--Leclerc comes to mind--there usually is a separation between self pay lines and lines where you pay the attendant found in a booth on the other side of the pump stations. Make sure that you go in the correct area. Many of the supermarket fuel areas are closed for lunch (12 or 12:30 to 2).
I suspect that getting fuel at night will not be a problem in that you are not likely to be driving at night that often. There is no joy to it: nothing to see and it is more pleasant to look for accommodations in the late afternoon or early in the evening, before dinner time.

Further to unleaded and diesel question, there are now different grades of fuel available, up to 3 for unleaded - normal, super and premium and 2 for diesel - normal and premium. Normally you only need the normal grade for either, except when you are driving a high performance car, but even then it will work with normal (though you may get a better performance with premium grade). Shell in Europe has a premium grade fuel called V-Power, which costs around 5% more.
