Gas or Diesel car

Maybe people should have to prove their statements about how much better gas mileage diesel cars have, also, because modern gas-powered cars get very good mileage and I don't think that assumption is that true anymore, either. I have a 12 yr old Honda Civic and it can get 40 MPG, for example (on the highway, anyway, in city I get about 35).

A BMW 320D 60+ MPG. Not even impressive

Audi A3 automatic
70 MPG
I think your Civic is about the size of a VW golf .

UK MPG vs US MPG
Like comparing apples and oranges, both tend to be round, but that's about it.

"The United States uses a different gallon than the United Kingdom. As a result, miles per gallon measurements are different. This calculator will allow you to convert a U.S. MPG rating to a British Imperial one. Note: Canada uses the British system." (And Trump uses his own system)

U.S. Gallon = 3.785411784 Liters
Imperial Gallon = 4.54609 Liters

Even though I grew up with that system, it no longer makes any sense to me. To talk about mileage (kilometrage?) to any continental European, you will not be understood unless you express yourself in the number of liters used per 100km.

No, we just have no desire to be dominated by antiquated measurement systems that the entire world has abandoned. How many leagues can you drive on a tank of gas?

Wow, some new guys tell us we have to provide links to other parts of the internet to "prove" our views, oh dear it would seem that a link proves owt....
you get what you are given at the rental company
On top of the other dangers in Spain, you may not drive over a white line and you will find cops hang about to catch you doing such a thing.
"Greenies" a whole new word, if you mean that someone believes in man made climate change, then you might use another term the "majority".
Generally, by flying across the pond in a massive aircraft you have already damaged the upper atmosphere more than choosing between petrol and diesel. However, at the moment the concept of clean diesel is awaiting the jury, but generally basic engine science suggests that diesel is more likely to generate micro-particulates and more noxious gases than petrol. These are the things that we accept kill many people on the planet.

Thank you all
Thanks to everyone for all their comments. But quite honestly I was only inquiring about Fuel Mileage vs Fuel cost. All the other comments just show how opinionate we all have become. Enjoy your travels be they by bicycle or jet plane.

Your question did not mention fuel mileage vs. fuel cost. It simply asked for opinions on gas vs. diesel (as stated in your headline). I think you got a good discussion of the pros and cons of both, including limits and attitudes against diesel in some European cities, as well as thoughts on the other side. Although you stimulated a good dialogue, if you wanted something else, it is an example that you should always clearly state what information you are seeking. Safe travels to you, in any event.
