I believe it's around .80EUR a litre except the UK which is .80GBP for the same quanitity. It's all inexpensive though compared to the cost of an holiday. Super unleaded usually costs more, but delivers better economy and performance.

In Germany (France is sometimes a few pennies cheaper, but usually not much) prices are approx.

.91-.96 Euro/ltr - Diesel
1.12-1.28 Euro/ltr - range for the 3 gasoline grades

The most peculiar point I find about pricing is that diesel moves around quite a bit. For example, on the way to work, the price at the Shell station may be .88 / liter, and then on the way home it's .93 - That's like 20 cents/gallon, and this happens at least once a week.

Forgot the part about the hotels...

I have no idea what CHEAP is to you, but if you reserve ASAP, you might get a decent room on or near the beautiful wine road in Alsace, very very near to Strasbourg.

Try Hotel de la couronne in Riquewihr (www.hoteldelacouronne.com), where we stayed in March (it was rather cheap IMO, perhaps 70 Euro for a double). We've also stayed in Hotel L'oriel in Riquewihr, a bit more money, but not too much. Both hotels have private parking, and I think it's free at couronne.

This summer I rarely if ever saw gasoline (not diesel) for less than a euro a litre, generally closer to 1.20. That's well over 4US$ per gallon. Depending on what you drive at home and what you rent, the good news is that you likely to get far better mileage in Europe and you are likely to drive less than for a major road trip in the US.

Can second the Hotel de la Couronne in Riquewihr, though I too don't know what qualifies as "cheap" . Parking is spacious and we could observe our car from the bedroom window, which I appreciated.

When in France, buy the fuel at supermarkets rather than gas stations. It is cheaper, although the differential is not as great as it used to be.

We found the equivalent of 2 star hotels in B&B's to cost from 35 to 50 euros a night including breakfast. They usually were better than 2 star hotels. Look up Gites de France, which is what we used, and then you can make reservations ahead of time--no deposit required, in my experience.

Hi

Michael is correct.

Typical French prices (Euro / litre) for diesel today were :

Supermarket = 0.86
Gas station = 0.96
Autoroute = 1.06

Worth filling up off the autoroute ?

Peter

Cheapest gas prices in Europe are in Luxembourg and Spain as per Armed Forces Radio. Luxembourg is 10-15 cents cheaper than Germany per liter, hence the long gas lines in Luxembourg. The gas stations in Wasserbillig, Luxembourg (just a few miles from German border) are huge just like in the U.S., with 10 or more pumps and with stores that sell everything.
