It would not be practical as a day trip, but you can take a train from Trieste to Verona. There is a fast train that doesn't require changing trains. Departs Trieste at 9:39 and arrives Verona at 12:30. When do you plan to travel? It may be too far in advance to book your tickets.

You really, really need to get some good guide books for Italy. There are so many things to see, no one can tell you what to see without knowing what you enjoy, etc. Why are you going to Verona? You mentioned Venice. Are you going there? How much time do you have? What is the rest of your trip?

As a start, trains are easy and cheap and connect nearly city center to city center in each city. You do not even have to book ahead if you do not want to, or if you are concerned bout timing.

Can you fly into Venice? Unless you are taking a cruise with stops you want to visit, it might be easier to fly, and I would fly into Venice (Marco Polo) if you want to see Venice, then train to Verona, if you really want to visit Verona.

Juliette's balcony is not an authentic sight. The amphitheater is interesting. For my money, however, Florence is about 100 times more interesting than Verona.

It's too early for August train tickets. Summer train schedules don't start until the 2nd weekend in June and won't be loaded into the system until closer to that time. You can buy discount tickets in advance once summer schedules are loaded. Venice/Verona or Trieste/Verona would be around 19€ with the discount.

List of sites/hours:

If you have a choice on cruise port, it would be easier to get to Verona from Venice. There are lots of regional trains (at least one per hour - 7€) between Venice/Verona that don't require a change. You don't need advance tickets for the regional trains as they don't have reserved seating and there aren't any discount tickets. There's also the fast trains on this route, but they are only about 15 minutes faster and triple the cost.
