I did the trip (in reverse) by train from Lisbon to Sevilla. First an overnight train from Lisbon to Madrid, then the high-speed AVE from Madrid to Sevilla. It was OK but I think flying from Sevilla to Lisbon may be a better idea. My train got into one station in Madrid but the AVE to Sevilla left out of the other station. I had to hurry on the subway so as not to miss my connection. In addition, the AVE wasn't cheap so cost-wise I don't think flying isn't significantly more expensive.

carol,
By air you'd need to connect in Madrid. Iberia has daily flights; the best connection takes 3 1/2 hrs. The fare, though, could cost $250 or more, if you don't snag a discount.

You might be better off simply renting a car for the day. The trip should take no more than 5 hrs. if you take the more direct, southern route through Beja and Serpa (Pedro would know better than I exactly how long it takes).
We've done the trip from near Evora (Terena, actually),1 hr. east of Lisbon, to Seville, but it was easy and only took us about 4 hrs.
By air, by the time you taxi to the airport, get there early to avoid long lines, check your bags, wait to board, then 3 1/2 hrs. flight time plus taxi from airport to downtown Seville, you could probably get there as quickly, easily by driving. We found the roads very well maintained but beware the speed demon Portuguese drivers (speedier, even, than Spaniards)! Actually we didn't encounter much traffic on that route in July.

I've done the overnight train Lisbon-Madrid, both ways, as well.
By train it would be way too long a trek, as GGinSF says, because you'll need to change in Madrid, plus the Lisbon-Madrid train takes 10 1/2 hrs. and is a Tren Hotel, which means
expensive, plus the cost of the AVE.

Hope this helps you to decide.

Finally, I can help! I've been lurking and this is my first post ever. My husband and I are doing something very similar in May. We are staying in Seville and the next stop is Lisbon. What we are doing on the last day there is renting a car to drive from Seville to Malaga (a few hours drive, I think 2 1/2 if you go straight, but we'll be taking the better part of a day to do it leisurely.) Why Malaga? Because Malaga-Lisbon is one of Europe-by-Air's $99 one-way connections! Go to europebyair.com and you can see all of the partner cities. I have never been to Europe before, so I'm planning all this on my own intuition, experience from travel to other places and a lot of help from this forum. We are also flying from Lisbon back to Madrid for our flight home for $99 each!

Wow!,

I didn't know there was this much interest in beloved Lisbon!?

Best Bet is Europe By Air...if you like flying.

Best Scenic Bet.... Seville to Madrid on AVE (2hr 25mins) -RENFE.ES (Spainish National Railways) has all the schedule.

Madrid to Lisbon on Tren Hotel Lusitania (10hr plus). If you have a rail pass..1st or 2nd class suppplements are like 10 bucks. You MUST make reservations on both trains or you are assed out! Plus Lusitania has cabin nad berths for additional upgrades...Preferente and Gran Classe Double or Single. Go to www.cp.pt (Portugese National Railways)..for more information.

Later,
