From Paris to Versailles

What is the best way to get from Paris to Versailles? We will be staying in Paris, but would like to spend one day in Versailles. Is there a train that travels that route? Any suggestions are greatly appreciated. Thank you!

yes, it's very simple, the suburban RER light rail line goes there in about 15 minutes because it's only about 12 miles from Paris. You just have to take the RER C5 line (yellow) to the Versailles Rive Gauche station. Be sure you get on the right train (C5) as other RER C trains will go to other stations.

I highly recommend a day trip to Versailles. You will need at least that much time but an entire week would be better. It's simply huge and it's a vast layout. I love its website: www.chateauversailles.fr. Really amazing!

You can take the RER Ligne C from Pont de l'Alma/Tour Eiffel to Versailles, Direction Versailles-Rive Droite. Log onto www.ratp.fr (Parisian transit authority and click on the English icon at the top right if you don't read French). There are many trains throughout the day -- Versailles is a very respectable town. The RER trip is about 35 minutes, then you'll have about a 15 minute walk to reach the front gates of the Palace and then another 10 minutes to get to the visitors entrance.

Bon voyage!

The RER station, Rive Gauche, is fairly close to the palace itself. That particular RER line originates at Gare nd'Austerlitz and follows along the left bank past Musee Dorsey and Invalides.
You can take the train at several points along the route.

I do not know what advice to give you on timing your entry into the palace itself. I tried arriving before the box office opened and getting in early.
That strategy did not work because the tour bus mobs caught us at the Kings Bed Chamber. Some suggest touring the gardens and the other buidings first and entering the palace after 2 PM when the tour bus groups have gone elsewhere. I cannot verify that suggestion through experience, but I do not that my early arrival was to no avail.
