I had the idea I had visited about 40 countries but with the rules of CTC I go to about 50.
(St Martin scores for 2 countries...)
Corsica and Sicily are also separated...
I'm surprised as to why UK is split into 4 'countries' Whilst Catalona is not mentioned, nor are Wallonia vs Flanders, nor Bavaria, Saxony, Quebec, Lomnbardia or ...
I'm also surprised at the number of people from overseas who have visited Liechtenstein. I've been there twice (on business, not in the banks nufortunately) and I think I'm about the only one of my european friends who ever went there.
Never been to southern hemisphere, though.
Some countries cover for a big territory : US or China... US people are clearly at a disdvantage compared to say, a Belgian who lives in a country of about 30 000 Sq km, and is in less than 2 hours'drive in 4 different countries.
mvg.

Vatican counts as a country and so does Monaco.Lichtenstien was a one day stopover,in Vaduz.Europe and the British Isles.pretty much most, barring some former Soviet Bloc.
West asia limited to Cyprus ,Syria,Jordan, UAE,Oman , Kuwait,Baharain and Qatar.
South Asia, India a number of times,Nepal,Bangladesh and the Pakistan,Burma and Bhutan on the wishlist
Far East pretty much all and extensively including Japan.Korea and Taiwan to be ticked.
Australasia. Covered Australia, New Zealand and P&G, South Pacific on the bucket list.
The wanna do is endless if only time permits.
West Africa accounts for my tally of around 8 countries, followed by the rest of the African continent clockwise,Morrocco,Algeria,Egypt,as I went to Juba, its now South Sudan.Ethiopia,Kenya,Tanzania,DRC,Zambia,Mozambiqu e,
Zimbabwe,SA and recently Namibia.Seychelles and Mauritius have been explored.
Would some day want to visit Saint Helena and Ascension Island in the Atlantic off the coast of West Africa, there are cruises only, now from Cape Town, its a three week turn around.Well.Some day.Madagascar in the cross hairs.
US and Canada a couple of times. Would like to do more elaborately, simply too big.
South America would include Mexico,Peru and Brazil.Probably 2016 will give me an opportunity.

Fun to see this old thread and where everyone else has been. Like Treesa my count has gone up since 2004.
Back then it was 40 and now it's 71, using the Century Club list it would rise to 87, but still nowhere near cfnculvercity's 113 mentioned above! .
As others have said it's all about how you count them. Here's my take on why I don't use theCentury Club rules...

Am now up to 46 - have added a couple more in europe and Asia. but most trips are to europe since at this point at least half are business and that's where the clients are in my area. So LOTS of repeat visits to major cities for either congresses or market research - plus to Germany now for client.
And have been here since 2003.

My total was 33 back in '04, but now that I see folks are counting islands that are part of a country, like Corsica and Sardinia, I'll have to count again. Can I count the zillion Greek and Turkish islands to which I have sailed? By that logic I could count Catalina and Staten Island.

Well, if I follow the Century Club's definitions, I get to add 13 more countries! That would put me at 87.
Crete, Dodecanese Islands, Hawaiian Islands, Hong Kong, Ionian Islands, Ireland (North), Java, Mongolia (that's one I forgot), Scotland, Siberia, Sicily, Turkey in Asia and Wales.
I have been to Dubai, but only to the airport, and to Srpska, but only passing through on a train, so I don't think they should count. Amazing how many islands there are, have no plans to visit any of them except perhaps the Galapagos, or some more Greek ones.

Well travelled Brit. Ischia was your backyard, if I'm right, yrs ago. Your input and blog posts were decisive in me having a great time there.Stayed in Forio. Thx once again. I'm amazed at the resources this platform has to offer.

I've missed a few out too, espcecially if islands count
Java, Bali, Guam, Labuan, Diego Garcia
Ascension and the Falklands in 1982. Never went ashore on either, but spent 3 months at sea in a South Atlantic winter avoiding air attacks and exocet missiles!
Rhodes and Simi
Isle of Man, Isle of Wight, do they count?

I can see counting some far away territories as separate countries (e.g. Reunion). I can even see counting islands that are politically largely distinct (e.g. Isle of Man). But something like Sicily or Crete? That stretches it too much for me.
