My son Axel is 11 as well. Maybe they could give it a try (mid French mid English on both side).
He would love to know how the little Americans live on the other side of the Atlantic
He told me "by email not by mail" (it is so much faster) What do you think?

This brought back fond memories. When I was seventeen and after taking French for only a year, I found a pen pal from a list at the Alliance Francaise in Bangkok. We communicated for 7 years. Then I moved to USA. To make a long story short, we reconnected and I met him and his family in person for the first time in 1998 (after 23 years of no contacts). He was the reason I took French again because he does not know English and I lost most of my French conversation.
I highly encourage even by e-mail. Axel is a nice boy. This might lead to a life long friendship. It did mine.

I think penpal stories are amazing...I started writing to a girl my age in London, England when we were approx 13, late 60s. She and her Mom came to Toronto in 72,and then Anne came by herself in 82. FINALLY, my hubby and I are getting to Europe in Oct of this year, and will be staying at Anne's place while in London. She has known me just about as long as my best friend! We should have a great time, and I am so looking forward to it!

When I was a teenager I had a German pen pal her name was Ingrid. We both knew French and that was the language that we used to correspond with each other.Eventually years later we were able to meet in person.
She came to Rome and spent one month at my house..months later she invited me to Frankfurt to spend some time with her family.
Ten days later I met a handsome American boy that was in the Af and was stationed in Rhein Main?, it was the classic Coupe de Foudre..We married in Rome and followed him around the world.
We are still married and we have 3 adorable grandchildren.
