A closer check on their website confirms my suspicion. They give you a ticket for the transport network RVF, which covers a much smaller area than KONUS.

Day 1 - arrive in Frankfurt, take train to Freiburg (staying at Hotel Minerva based on your review!)
Day 2 and 3, stay in Freiburg, day trips TBD and depending on the weather
Day 4 - 5 - take train to Cologne, stay in Cologne, day trip and/or museums depending on the weather
Day 6 - train to Frankfurt
Day 7-8 - stay in Frankfurt, day trips TBD depending on weather
Day 9 - go home (boo)
The Black Forest may not be as pretty in late March as it is in summer, but I love winter and I love gray skies. If it rains, I have a rain jacket and umbrella. I'm really not worried about it. So many things are in the area and Freiburg looks like such a lovely town, that I know it'll be a great trip.
Thanks to all for your help! If you want to throw restaurant recommendations at me, that'd be great, no dietary restrictions!

If the weather is nice, it's a 1hr 15 minutes train to Wurzburg. The Residence and Marienberg Fortress are worth a visit, you can relax along the river at either a wine or beer garden. Wander along the Main River. Maybe some flowers are starting to bloom in the ringpark, which runs near the train station. The gardens at the Residence are free to walk through if you don't want to go inside.
I'm not sure of the name, but on the back side of the fortress, are some interesting gardens to walk through.
Trains run frequently between the 2 cities. Wertheim, is one of many other interesting towns in the area.
Enjoy the trip with your son. You can also look for some organized day trips out of Frankfurt...pay a little more money and relax.

My family is from the Black Forest outside of Freiburg, near Titisee-Neustadt and I have been there a number of times. I love the area and think you’ll find plenty to do, even in March. Here’s a blog post of mind from a trip a few years ago. There are some specific recommendations for what and where to eat. Enjoy!

bd - Thanks, Wurzburg is on the short list for sure, spending an entire day there would be easy to do.
nylilly - thanks for the foodie recommends! I joke about traveling just to eat, but yeah, it's true!
