Frankfurt
Flying to Frankfurt on May 31. Is there anything in Frankfurt worth staying for. After travelling for over nine hours on the jet, I dont want to go to far, but Ive heard Frankfurt is expensive and not much to see or do. Probably buying a eurail saver pass so dont really want to waste one day of travel going just out of town.

Information, suggestions, comments greatly appreciated.

Also has anybody travelled on one of these rail passes. What is it like on overnight trais.(Iread somewhere that travelling at night sves you accomodation, if you are travelling on a budget.)

Randy

Can't really answer yor question without knowing where else you are going. Frankfurt isn't awful, but people usually suggest heading to Rothenburg, for instance, which is an hour or 2 away. Sounds like you need to check some guidebooks.
I've traveled with a saverpass, and done an overnight in a (private) sleeper, there are also couchettes, which are not private, but cost less. www.euraide.de has information, and prices of various night train suppliments with railpasses.

Purchasing tickets for and finding the rail stations at the Frankfurt airport is a breeze. We did it last December, landing after 9 hrs, then getting on a train for Hannover. It couldn't be easier -- you just follow the signs. The only downside is that it can involve a lot of walking. We didn't get tickets/seats ahead of time, but that would depend on what season and which city you are aiming for.

How funny, I'll be in Frankfurt on May 30. I was there once and took a 1/2 day tour....it was fascinating and charming, not at all like the big, bad, urban image I had in my head of this city.

I work with a woman who is from Germany and she is recommending that while in Frankfurt, I simply cross the Mein (sp?) River to find a more idyllic slice of life. She says there are courtyards--parts of people's homes, I guess--where you can wander in and drink apple wine.

I am originally from Frankfurt and my grandfather still lives there so I go back annually for a visit. I find I have alot of spare time on my hands and always find something fun and interesting to do. I would suggest Sachsenhausen which is just across the river down town. It is a wonderful old section with lots of quaint gasthaus one right after the other which specialize in applewine and beer of course. I would also suggest you try an applewein which can only be had in Frankfurt. Be warned though, not like wine at all! If you prefer it a little sweet tell them "suisse gespritzt" or you can have it spritzed with soda water "sauer gespritzt" (which is how my husband prefers it). Or pure but this I would not recommend the first time around. Also, in the old section downtown there are many museums and the Goethe Haus. Also the Rhine River offers boat cruises up and down the river. Very scenic and you can even take this cruise to some quaint towns for the day. There are also some really beautiful old buildings in the Romer and Dom areas downtown. I however would suggest that if you want to just relax your first day I would explore the downtown area a bit by the river and head over to Sachsenhausen for a light lunch and some beverage. There is seating both inside and out and always music playing. From there I would then catch a night train to your next destination which I do not believe you posted. Enjoy!

The applewein is very refreshing, more like a hard cider. Suisse gespritzt is mixed with 1/4 to 1/3 limonade (orange or lemon soda) and sour gespritzt is mixed with 1/4 to 1/3 selzer water. They are both very light and refreshing especially in the summer in the beer gardens. The suisse is almost like a white wine spritzer but not as sweet. In any event, if you have never tried it I would recommend it. It also will keep you regular as some are prone to constipation when travelling. ha ha.

Suggest Mainz, it is only about a half hour ride on the train. There was a good post here on Mainz in the last few days.

There is an "old town" historic area of Frankfurt but overall it is a business center and not of much interest to the average vacationer.

Hi,

Great to hear all the recommendations. I too will be in Frankfurt but landing May 24th, doing some traveling to other countries and back on May 31st. Have you made hotel reservations? If so, where and how much? I was looking at staying at a small hotel near the main station. I am guessing "Hauptbahnhof". Any recommendations.

Thanks!
Ran ...
