Regularly over the last weeks, people who wanted to contact me opened new threads and addressed me in the title, like "Franco (and others), ... question, please". I hope I've noticed all of them, but nevertheless, this is a little hazardous since I'm not such a diligent forum reader - rather the lazy type. Very often, I'm just checking the threads on which I've already posted before...
So if you want my opinion, please post your question on "my" appropriate thread (all the links are above, near the top); or, if you open a new thread for your question hoping that this way, more others might weigh in, then please post a short notice or a link to your question on "my" thread as well to prevent me from overlooking it. Thanks!

Update after a recent Venice trip: vaporetto line 82, the most important of all lines for the tourist, has changed name and has become no. 2 now. I'm sure there are countless references on Fodor's to line 82, so please bear that in mind.

THANKS! we fly friday and will be sailing one week, then on land two weeks. by chance, do you know the vaporetto line we take from the maritime port to Piazzale roma to pick up our car? (am taking all your posts with me!)

Hello bbobo, I suppose you'll exit from Stazione Marittima at S. Basilio, right? If so, it's precisely the line I've been referring to recently, no. 2 (ex-82). Have fun!

Hi franco,

there's another new line too - the no 3, which is for "pass-holders" only.

we discovered when trying to board it that this doesn't mean Venice cards. do you know what passes are valid?

the no 2 is good - the same route down the grand canal as the no 1, so it was very useful when we were going to and from the Rialto which was the nearest stop to our apartment, but far fewer stops, so fewer people tried to board it.

Hi ann, the answer is more or less the same as for the CartaVenezia/abbonamento problem I've already detailed above, quite long ago - line no. 3 is only for the lucky few who are in possession of a CartaVenezia (i.e. residents of Venice and those who were following my instructions above). Which is, though VeniceCard sounds like a simple translation, definitely not the same as VeniceCard!!!

Hi Franco,

we had a great time thanks, introducing our kids to Venice. We did some cooking with some lovely food we got from the rialto markets and nearby shops, saw lots of things we'd not seen before [and a few we had], and generally had a most relaxing and enjoyable week. I did post a tri report when we got back, but it seems to have sunk without trace!

Thanks for all your helpful tips - I should have realised that the "CartaVenezia" is not the same as the "Venice card". indeed, why would anyone be so foolish as to think they might be?

I don't think it's foolish. Rather, I think it's extremely confusing to call two completely different things by that similar names.
Btw, line no. 3 is actually an important improvement for the Venetian population. People who need the vaporetto to go to and from work, or to go shopping, sometimes had to wait as long as half an hour to enter "their" vaporetto because tourists were blocking stops and boats alike. Now, tourists are just blocking their own line on Canal Grande, and the Venetians can use no. 3 and go on with their normal life. I'm convinced it will make them less grumpy with tourists.

At least for a proud CartaVenezia holder like me... but seriously, you're right in many respects. Seasoned Venice travelers are often experiencing the same drawbacks as the locals, without enjoying the same benefits.

I spotted the MOST beautiful book in our local bookshop today - calld simply "Venice" it is full of the loveliest photos and recipes, AND, what made me post here, tips on how best to negotiate getting on and off a vaporetto.

who'd have thought you'd need one of those?
